I backed up over a stop sign last night in a small Missouri town in the fog trying to get around a sleeping driver who was parked in the drive to the entrance of the place I was delivering to. Ultimately it is what I get for not getting out to look, and I own up to it. I let my guard down once and it bit me. And there happened to be a cop right there in the parking lot who seen it all.
All the cop did was took my personal info off my CDL, asked my phone number and said other drivers have hit that same sign before and they would probably just fix it like they usually do but he would tell the city about it in the morning. He didn't even ask what my company name was or anything. I really was hoping that I would get lucky. Well, he called me today and said the city wants him to mail me a ticket for destruction of city property. And it is expensive also, over a $600 fine. And I am pretty sure its going to be classified as a moving violation. I don't know that for sure, but one can only assume, since I was moving. And to make things worse, he said the city will be mailing me a bill for the sign replacement however much that might be.
So the purpose of this post is, I have never gotten a ticket like this in all my years of driving, I was wondering if anyone has any advice pertaining to the actual ticket that could benefit me, like are any of those clubs where you pay them a monthly fee for legal help worth it in this case? Or any other tips or tricks that may help me in this situation towards the fine and/points on my CDL etc? Or should I just suck it up and pay it and quit setting myself up for flame bait that I am probably going to become in this thread
Getting a ticket for property destruction (Stop Sign).

Find a lawyer local to courthouse, then ask his advice and estimate of cost . In my experience it'll be money well spent, I certainly wouldnt dream of paying up before I spoke to a lawyer who knew the local faces.

That was kind of my thought process as well. It was early enough in the day where I googled lawyers and called a few. Most would not handle munincipal issues, others said they can't accept new clients right now yada yada yada. So when Monday arrives I need to keep calling around. Seems like there is a shortage of legal help in Stoddard county, Missouri
Another Canadian driver and Boondock Thank this. -
Nice cop. He’s seen it happen before and he sat and watched you do it. Awesome. Should you have GOAL, definitely. Should he have stopped the situation, Absolutely.
Another Canadian driver, Shackdaddy, Coffey and 7 others Thank this. -
If the cop was sitting there watching all this, how come he didn't scold the guy for parking in (near/blocking) the drive way????? I mean, some preventative measures wouldn't have hurt here.JC1971, Bean Jr., Another Canadian driver and 12 others Thank this. -

Back when the BNSF terminal was just built I was in Elwood at a stoplight waiting to turn left. I just missed the green arrow, so I sat thru my green light and cross traffics green light. All the while there is a cop sitting across from me. I make the left and as my headlights illuminate the road I see the weight limit sign. Cop lights me up and I tried the "I'm empty and under 15 tons" and he says "you're over length, weight restricted roads have length restrictions of 40 feet". I then tried "you can't see the sign until you turn down the road", he agreed and said "I'm not in charge of where the signs are".
After he wrote me the ticket I asked why he didn't try and warn me. That was the first time I heard the idea "Cops aren't around to prevent crime, they exist to punish criminals."
