On my Garmin OTR 500, I can select a search along my route, then type my search criteria into the box next to it. I use it for fuel stops that don't show up under the truck stop category, like some Kum & Go, Maverik, or Gas-N-Go stations. I do think you have to be somewhat specific with the search, though, so you might not be able to just search for strip clubs and get all of the results, unless strip club is part of the name.
Google Maps is probably your best bet, then satellite view the parking and routes to get there. Both Rand McNally and Garmin are tech companies more than GPS companies from my experience. They both have their issues when it comes to truck routing.
Anyway to search places along routes..

I called those con-way freight yards.
I would drop my trailer without asking go in fill up my big cup of water ...wave at the local guys doing their little stretch routine.. that I bought at an Oakland As game after delivering all the schools their windows. In San Francisco.
Then I sip that water thinking that today won't be as bad as that day and squint off into the distance.
Then I came on ttr to ##### about why am I still in Chicago. I swear I spent more time by the sox stadium than the actual employees on that yard sometimes.
But to answer your question. Naw not really. Just drop the trailer and go find some ####. I parked by the taco bell around the stadium and hoofed it a mile or two for that stupid As cup.
Was a good game though. Go find some ####. There's always something.
Don't be the guy in the jonesie show going "I'm in Houston" and expect people to go oooo ahhhh.
Ok.....what the hell did you do?
Nothing?
OK shut up nerd.
Those people always cracked me up. -
I agree with buzzarddriver, work is work not playtime, seems today in America we want it both.Dennixx Thanks this. -
Wow @201, I can't imagine the boring life you must be living. And you're dead wrong, or blind, probably both, on the state of health and mental health of driver's who don't think out of the box running OTR.
Lenny, I find a lot of stuff through the 'search along route' function on Google Maps. I've also found a lot of the threads here helpful like the 'best rest areas' ones.ghostcookie, Tug Toy and Dennixx Thank this. -

As the saying goes "all work and no play. "
I can't imagine doing this for near 50 years and never doing anything fun, interesting or exciting while roaming across the country.

Every truck GPS allows you to search for Places of Interest of POIs. Those POIs are listed in categories, shopping, restaurants, department stores, gas stations, recreation, etc. Every truck GPS will allow you to search by street address, so anything you can find on Google you can use truck GPS to navigate to the address. Anything you find on Google Maps, looking at the satellite view, you can "drop a pin" and plug those Lat & Long corodinates into truck GPS and navigate to them. Don't confuse empty space on a satellite view as truck parking. The satellite view could be months or years old and things like chain-link fences don't show up on sat view. Also "no truck parking" signs don't show up on sat view.

1. I’m not bashing any truck drivers who are overweight I was one of them. I’ve been overweight twice in my life I just know how to lose it when it gets too out of control. I actually think it’s sad that a lot of truck drivers don’t physically get out and do more. Your assessment that joggers don’t necessarily live longer lives is probably accurate. I for one don’t jog. I’m too old for that my joints and such couldn’t handle it. I walk or hike. You may not live longer but you’re gonna have a better quality of life if you do a little exercise at least a few days a week. Bad diet is what gets most of us out here. I will absolutely only eat what I cook myself and it’s usually very healthy food and a lot of fresh vegetables.
2. all work and no play? Come on man. Once again this is our life if we do OTR. You’re not cramming a normal life in on 3 to 4 days off a month at home. You’re simply recuperating. Probably crossing a couple things off a honey do list and then you’re right back out here. I’m not implying that I hit the strip club or a bar every night of the week. I’m simply saying when the stars align and it’s possible. I’ll give you an example. The current load I’m on. It was an 1800 mile trip. I had three days plus half of tomorrow. I chose to drive around 600 miles each of the first three days and got here early. It’s 4 PM where I’m at. My delivery is at 1 PM tomorrow. If there’s something to do around where I am, I’m gonna get out and do it. Why not? Do you suggest I sit in the bunk all that time eating junk food and not enjoying life? There’s at least one to two days per week I find myself in this type of situation. So my goal is to look for places that I can park when I’m gonna have extra time and maybe get off the truck and go do something. Go out to a nice dinner, go see a movie, walk around the mall, whatever.
I drive as much as any legal driver can. Every week. If I can do something other then trucking once a week while I’m out here for a few hours, I want to have that option. Most of the time it doesn’t work out anyhow. You get the time but there’s nothing around where you have to park.cuzzin it Thanks this.
