There is a potential trap for anyone that has a HazMat endorsement on your CDL if your state performs like TN and MI. Primarily it comes down to when your HazMat is nearing expiration. In some states, I'm not sure if it applies to all states, if you wish to let your HM expire you CANNOT JUST DO NOTHING, YOU MUST DO SOMETHING. Whether you want to end your HM endorsement TODAY or whether you want to just not get it again when you renew your CDL and other endorsements, YOU MUST WALK IN and exchange your current CDL for a replacement CDL without the HazMat. Failure to walk in to the driver license office and exchange your HazMat CDL for a non-HazMat CDL will cancel your CDL. Obviously, if you want to keep your HM endorsement, renew it. But, if you want to drop your HM you have to walk into your state's driver license office and exchange it for a CDL without the HM endorsement on it. Failure to do this will cause your CDL to be canceled.. Logic and Reasonableness are not the issue. Disagree all you want. It may sound very bizarre and stupid, I agree. Do it or your CDL may be canceled.
Here is the thread over in the HazMat message board
If you have a HazMat Endorsement, read this! License renewal.

In Texas, my license just has a “P” restriction that notifies when Hazmat portion becomes invalid.
Another Canadian driver, austinmike and Kyle G. Thank this. -
But your Hazmat endorsement is only good for exactly 5 years from the day it was issued and will expire before your CDL does. Best to find out from your state in advance to avoid problems.Another Canadian driver, Shackdaddy, Grumppy and 3 others Thank this. -

Also now I am curious, since I had the X endorsement, do I still have the tanker endorsement?Another Canadian driver and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
I beg EVERYONE reading this thread to NOT JUST ASSUME this will not affect you because your HazMat date is on your license, you don't intend to use/renew your HazMat, or any other reason. I never got a letter from the state or TSA. I NEVER went beyond the expiration date of my then current HazMat, and certainly not my CDL. The TSA sent my employer a letter a couple of months BEFORE HazMat expiration date saying my CDL was kaput, BEFORE my HazMat expired, BEFORE by CDL expired. I ASSUMED if I completed all steps for renewal BEFORE either expiration date nothing could go wrong. My state of Tennessee, Michigan, and maybe all or some other states require you to either renew your HazMat so many days or months before your current one expires OR REPLACE YOUR CURRENT CDL WITH A NON-HM CDL by walking into your DL office and making a swap or it will be canceled. As I said, everything happened before any expiration date happened. THAT'S WHY IT WAS A BIG SURPRISE.
If these conditions apply in your state, the drivers most at risk are the CDL drivers with HazMat now who plan to just let it expire and not renew it.
DOING NOTHING COULD CAUSE YOUR LICENSE TO BE CANCELED. It sounds too stupid to be true. It is not. That's why I posted the link in the first message of this thread. It has happened to other drivers. If you assume you are not at risk, you are EXACTLY the one at risk for it happening to you. Call your driver license office.
