Hi everyone. I would love to get some feedback and advice on companies for someone just starting out with no experience. I would like to stay local if I can and prefer driving a dump truck or flatbed. I have my class a cdl license and have no experience, just completed the program. I do have experience working on the dock so I am familiar with driving a tow motor. Could you please offer some guidance on which companies are good to start with and stay somewhat local. I know one of the members on here is a book of knowledge on company’s. Thanks again.

I appreciate the quick response, I should have mentioned I would prefer not to do ltl, I really would like to drive a dump truck or flatbed. If I found the right company I don't mind traveling, if I could though local would be a better option. For
me finding the right company that treats people right is more important that finding the best paying company. Thanks again

State highway department, city street departments, construction outfits, rock quarries, etc. all of those places are good for dump trucks. But depending on what part of the country you live in, the state jobs and the city jobs could require you salting and plowing in the winter time also.

Those options would be perfect, my only concern is not having experience. I don’t mind working in the winter plowing, I actually prefer it. I consider myself a very driven person and I like the challenge, only issue is getting a job without the time under my belt.

Is there a demand for that sector of the industry, I know over the road and Ltl has a huge demand for drivers at the moment, just not sure if the same can be said for that sector. Any feedback on that?

Start looking at trucking companies with terminals in your area. Then ask the company if they hire newbies. If they do ask them to have a couple of their newer drivers call or email you. Ask them questions without giving away what you hope the answers will be.
