Lual, I already had a very bad feeling about this and you and the other contributors helped to confirm that this is in no way safe or sane.
My friend is a treasure and I value him very much, but he can be extremely arrogant and thinks he knows best.
I trust the advice of experienced truck drivers. He can think what he wants and take the chance without me.
Would appreciate advice from the Kings of the Road out there

I agree with Lual. Only condition I would take this job on is if the journey is divided into two days or two sleep cycles.
Drive 500 plus miles the first leg of the trip, then stop. Feed the dogs. Get a motel room. Rest.
Next day, finish the trip.
The Cannon Ball Run deal is risky.Another Canadian driver, Diesel Dave, TruckDriversDaughter and 1 other person Thank this. -
first off , my condolences for your father , my mom passed a few years ago and my dad is now 87. None of us get out of this world alive , but it’s always painful when a loved one is gone Before their time .
To your question :
He has to rush to deliver the dogs , and they don’t even know the delivery locations yet ?
i agree, these are not transplant organs being rushed to surgery , it’s animals that no one wants ,
What’s the hurry ?
I have no issues with transporting dogs to other shelters , but why the rush ?
you’re gonna have to make unscheduled stops when the dogs get carsick and barf , traffic jams etc .
I understand the not stopping to sleep in a
Motel , because someone has to stay with the dogs and keep the vehicle running to keep them cool or warm or whatever .
But there’s no reason to rush rush rush
Also , it’s for a non profit and most of them want you to work for free . which is fine , if you enjoy volunteering your time for a good cause , which I have done quite a bit over my life , but I’m not going to endanger myself by riding with someone who has narcolepsy on a trip where there no reason to rush .
You came on here an asked for advice so my advice is :
Politely decline this offer .Gearjammin' Penguin, Sons Hero, Another Canadian driver and 4 others Thank this. -
He is NOT a "Friend".
No Friend Would Belittle Another Friend, So LOSE The "Friend".
Your SAFETY overrides Stupidity.
$500 or even $1,000 A Trip (One Way??) Is Chump Change.
Too Much NEGATIVE WEIGHT In The "Offer".
With ALL The Accidents, Collisions, Wrecks Daily Nationwide, Such Trip Could Be Your LAST!!Sons Hero, jethro712, Another Canadian driver and 2 others Thank this. -
disclosure … my wife’s sister did this for years and she, like myself know it takes patients and have to care what you are doing.
To be honest, you won’t like my comment.
So putting dogs in a cargo van for 14 plus hours, only stopping a couple times while driving at high speed (safety issue) to deliver them not knowing if the dog is going to be traumatized by just a ride let alone the experience of being stuck in a cage or back of a van seems to be selfish and very abusive.
shelter animals are already traumatized.
The shelter should know about how their dogs are treated and select their transportation more carefully.
If you do this without this clown, it takes more time to do this right. 14 hours is not going to happen, maybe 20 hours. The dogs (and cats) deserve better treatment which means more stopping, more precautions driving and to actually give a crap for the animal and not the money.Sons Hero, JolliRoger, WesternPlains and 11 others Thank this. -
1,000 miles will take roughly 16 hours. It’s legal for you. You are not under any of the restrictions we are. As far as the size of the van, you’ll be fine there too. 20 miles in and you will be completely comfortable. Safe travels and remember if you need a nap, stop and take one.
MACK E-6, Val_Caldera, Another Canadian driver and 2 others Thank this. -
Madison stop 24 hrs after departure and MN stop later that afternoon.
Another Canadian driver and Boondock Thank this. -
If they have to be somewhere by a certain time, leave a day earlier. Make it an adventure. Take your time and enjoy the trip.
Otherwise, tell the guy to pound sand.JolliRoger, MACK E-6, Val_Caldera and 3 others Thank this. -
Imagine what the inside of that van is going to smell like by the end of the trip. Who's going to clean out the van?
JolliRoger, bryan21384, InTooDeep and 5 others Thank this.
