brokers on some of these load boards are underpaying 2$ a mile… you need at least 3$ A mile, or more, to be a successful owner operator.
Where do smart owner operators find good loads?
p.s. I’m never signing a lease purchase from these major carriers.

I can guarantee that these major carriers like Werner, swift, usx, dart, are getting way more than 3$ a mile. So why can’t other owner operators do ot?

If you are in a position where you NEED $3 a mile to succed then you have already failed and/or need to step back and reevaluate the situation. My base cost to operate is $1.70 a mile to break even and that is assumeing fuel at $7 with 150k average miles with 6mpg which is less then my average according to ifta last year and includes my insurance, average monthly maintaince, payments and 18 new tires a year. I usually call it $1.90 and add anything extra to my oh #### account giving me about $40K a year for repairs. And thats me rounding way way up.
Will i thrive on $2 loads? No not really but i wont starve out either. And there is a good bit of wiggle room in my minimum budget too due to me assumeing fuel costs will be higher then they are now. $2.50 loads have me paid as well as most experinced company drivers as my own pay rate averages around $0.50 a mile with a bit left over for my oh #### fund. $3 a mile is pure gravy and while i average $3.50 a mile (my last load was $4.72 a mile for refrence) i dont NEED that $3.50 to keep on the road it just makes it nicer and easier. -
