What do scales have to do with ports of entry in states that have ports of entry without scales in them?

There use to be a sign going south on US491(old 666) as you got to Gallup that said all trucks must go to the port of entry west of Gallup on I-40. You would have to go all the way west to the AZ/NM state line to turn back east.
How many drivers have made that mistake?????
And is that sign still there?

A couple things need clarified, the POE on US 26 at Torrington, you must stop if westbound, but not eastbound. The scale at Lusk, you must stop if SB on 85, even if you are continuing SB, also if you are going WB on US 18, if you are NB on 85 or EB on 18, you don't have to stop, HOWEVER, if they are really bored, and I speak from exp., they will have the Lusk cop or the nearest trooper pull you over for grins to check your paperwork if you come off 18. The only time you stop at Casper is if you exit to US 26 WB, or are travelling on Salt Creek Route. Sundance, you must stop going either direction, unless you get a prepass greenlight. Gillette you only have to stop if you're on 59, 51 or Garner Lake (as someone mentioned in the other thread), also the POE in Alpine, if it's open, you must stop if you are WB on 89/26 or EB on 89/26 or NB on US 89 (even if you are making the right onto EB89 towards Jackson), also the scale at Alpine is also a Fish and Game checkpoint, and they will occasionally setup there to during hunting season and to check the outfitters in the area.

The simplest way to understand Wyoming POE's is if you see a white sign saying commercial vehicles must stop then you must stop unless your pre-pass gives you clearance. The green port of entry signs don't mean you have to stop. It is just informational.

This past week I asked the DOT Officer at Gillette, WY (I was westbound) if I really needed to pull in there. She said if I entered on I-90 there was no reason for me to. I have a Prepass and there is a weigh station at Sundance that has the signal so it picked me up. Next time I can just skip Gillette

    Sometimes they have ambiguous signage.

So basically they can stop you or cant.
