Help me with rates

You can’t really rate that kind of stuff that way. Too many variables, permits, escorts, maybe labor, rooms, who knows. You really have to go by the individual move, figure out what your costs are and go from there.

 

Maybe ask them what their budget is for this type of work? There are always the customers who want cheap but this strikes me as something where the customer probably takes it very serious and has an idea of what it takes spend wise. There have been several times that I would be getting paid a lot less if I had not taken this approach.

I think flatbed at leagal dimensions are getting close to 5/ mile
I don’t know your situation but I would never do anything local by the mile… a 10 mile trip might take 2 hours by the time you load and unload maybe more if it’s a pita to load/unload or they might not be quite ready when they say they are. So to be anywhere near fair to yourself you would be charging 20+ per mile which would make 100/ hour in this case. Honestly that’s hardly enough for a 2 axle trailer. I make that kind of hourly rate hauling asphalt in a tandem.
I would be thinking 150/ hour plus permits for what I assume you are going to be doing with a trailer that size… or do you mean truck+trailer axles?
You might be able to get annual permits which will be much easier and save money. If you’re already into oversize/weight a lot of this you probably already know.

 

150 an hour is on the cheap end now.

 

And do yourself a favor and price everything as a round trip. What I mean by this is, if you need 4.50 per mile to be profitable you should bid $9.00. Plus permits. If it’s short haul local work price it by the hour. From the time you leave the barn till the time you return.

 

I thought that was how you were supposed to bill trucks. Mine are already paid to come home when they leave. Even if it’s Ft McMurray back to Montreal or Halifax. It’s nice when I have time to load them, really nice when I can pile a bunch of LTL on one. But my business is a little different than freight work. Sometimes I just need that truck back. If time is an issue they offload and head home with a contrail coming off their ### and it doesn't hurt me.
