Rash of parts thefts is leaving Freightliner trucks inoperable
A rash of thefts of semiconductor-loaded powertrain control modules from parked Freightliner and Western Star trucks is turning the tractors into oversize paperweights. Daimler Truck North America is going after the bad guys but has few leads.
The rip-offs of common powertrain control module 4 units relate to the ongoing shortage of microchips. Harvesting and reprogramming the modules allow them to work in other trucks, Daimler said.
“The theft of CPC modules is a crime that threatens the livelihood of customers and disrupts our dealers’ operations,” Paul Romanaggi, DTNA chief customer experience officer, said in a press release Monday...

I've read about this sort of thing in the civilian world, where folks with gasoline-powered family cars are having their catalytic converters stolen because of the value of the precious metals in the catalytic converters.
But is this the first I've heard of commercial big rigs being systematically targetted for their parts.
These are ugly ugly times we're living in, that's for sure.
Stay safe.
And keep your wits about you.Another Canadian driver, Rideandrepair, Opendeckin and 1 other person Thank this. -
Remember stolen catalytic converters? Same thing? So THIS is what it comes to, stealing parts. It's no shock, really, and get used to it. Bootleg parts, like kidneys, have always had a following. I remember MANY a truck tire, rolled out of the back of the trailer. As the world deteriorates, scofflaws will always have a field day.
Speaking of "micro chip" shortage, if any,, I read, the new Ford Ranger/Bronco has thousands of completed trucks, waiting on a chip, and people, tired of waiting almost a year, are cancelling the orders,,,and the band played on,,77fib77 and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Check ebay. When the DPF quality sensor shortage was at its peak those ####ers were going for $5000 there.

Precisely why my engine is controlled by a metal rod.
Hell my next car will likely have this device mounted on top of the intake manifold that regulates the air/fuel mix and requires no computer to run. It'll also have an extra pedal on the floor to confuse would-be thieves.Capacity, Cleduskenworth, mp4694330 and 10 others Thank this. -
