I'm new to the forums. I am a retired OTR driver that spent about 16 years on the road. I have been on disability retirement for about 18 years now and am looking into doing something on a part time basis and need to figure out going rates.
I just got a complete dump bed setup for my 1985 f350 diesel pickup (it has an f450 chassis). I should have no problem getting 5 yards on it. I will only be looking to haul within about a 50 mile radius here in south Carolina and will only be working 2 or 3 days a week. Also fuel is not an issue because I operate my truck on used motor oil and my fuel is free as I have several shops that give me more than I can ever use.
What kind of rates should I be charging if I break into something of this nature?
I will operate mostly on a landscaping business type format so dot regulations as far as icc numbers will not apply to my type of business but I should still try to keep myself into the going rates because I will have added insurance costs and other related expenses.
I'm basically looking for something to do as I am tired of doing nothing and now with my kids grown up that makes even more free time.

Landscaping is exempt from DOT regs? How’s that work? If you have a landscape business you can haul dirt and stuff for profit with no DOT OR MC number?

I'm looking into it but around here there are plenty of landscape companies running small dump trucks like mine without any icc numbers or following any type of normally accepted regulations. I even watch them bypass scales ( I won't have any to pass for my intended area) without an issue.
For all intended purposes I will just be a guy with a pickup making a couple extra dollars. There are several people around here doing the same thing and doing it completely under the table.Another Canadian driver and LTL Bull Thank this. -

I guess you need to find out the price of 5 yds of whatever delivered is. Then find out the cost to pick up yourself. Shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. Your rate will need to be competitive, to get any business. 5 yds of mulch around hers is $240 delivered. A friend of mine did that in the 90’s with a brand new Dodge Diesel. Made a killing in summer. Normally working Local LTL as a casual, making good hourly pay. Sometimes he would turn them down, when they called him in, making more with his little dump truck. His advantage was being able to dump it anywhere it would fit, saving the homeowner labor.

As far as rates, you might try approaching some landscape companies and materials yards and ask them what the going rates are, and offer them a little discount.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -

I will ask around here when I manage to catch up with one of the trucks I see hauling the stuff around. I was hoping to not limit myself to stuff from the gravel plant but possibly also doing dump runs for people. I think there are plenty of things I can do with a small dump truck that will supliment my disability retirement income and give me something to do as well. I only paid $500 for the entire dump bed setup including the pto and all so I really can't get hurt on it with my running free fuel and all.Another Canadian driver and RockinChair Thank this.
