Good morning everyone.
I got my CDL A and Twic Card about 2 months ago and can't find any part time CDL A work in the NYC area.
I'm a full time firefighter (it's shift work) so I generally have a few rotating days and nights off a week.
I decided to get my CDL A after hearing / reading about the super high demand for drivers.
I'm having a very hard time finding any company that offers part time work.
Does anyone have any real leads on a company in the NYC area that takes on and trains new drivers on a part time basis?
I've applied everywhere but no one seems to want part timers.
Should I be team driving?
Is that easier for me to land some part time work?
Should I be trying to hook up with brokers to land me work?
I have no idea..
Sorry if this sounds like a complaint - that's not my intention.
Thanks in advance for any advice everyone
Can't find "new driver" part time CDL A work anywhere around NYC

Have you tried box truck delivery companies or foodservice? I think you might have an issue with your schedule since you dont have the same days off every week
tscottme, chimbotano, GESchaefer and 1 other person Thank this. -
I own a small mobile boat repair business and I have become burned out from doing it for over 20 years. I decided to upgrade from a class B to an A cdl. I have two part time gigs driving right now one is for a local company that sells new trucks for road striping I deliver them all over the united states and the other is for a local sod company that needs a part time driver for sod deliveries.
Found both jobs on craigslist.xlsdraw, austinmike, tscottme and 3 others Thank this. -
fwiw, I know a UPS driver (non cdl) who said he’s training with UPS to get his cdl A and will work 3 days a week driving a tractor trailer making the same money as a non cdl driver working 6 days a week. But, UPS is unionGESchaefer and tscottme Thank this. -
The sod gig is at an old school farm they do golf course sod they only have three KW and two are newer 20-21 trucks and one older 95 model all are 10spds and they required a driving test to be eligible apparently they were having issues finding some one that could drive a manual transmission truck for a part time job.
GESchaefer Thanks this. -
Team Driving is not likely to help you, as your days off move around and team driving is all about never stopping, they would need to have another driver with the opposite schedule of you to drive when you aren't driving. Food service, beverage delivery, construction are the usual jobs always hiring for local work. I don't know who else might hire you. I hope you find something.
Bean Jr. and GESchaefer Thank this. -

I was always curious......if a firefighter gets a big warehouse fire call 30 min before he is scheduled to end shift, is he expected to "do overtime" to fight the fire ? Or will he be relieved with minimal overtime ? I would guess fight the fire first, worry about ending shift later. This could be a problem with hiring on part time at a trucking co. They know the fire dept is your first obligation. Luck to ya'
