    The Story:
My father is a O/O and drives a 2016 Cascadia with a DD15. He had been asking me for months to find a device that would allow him to trigger a manual regen of the DPF as for some reason the in cab switch no longer starts a cycle. I recently had a chance to sit in the rig and start it up and see that the DPF regen light isn't on after the blub check so its not sending a warning of any kind at the moment.

According to him his driving isn't heating things up enough to burn out the soot and he eventually then has to pay Freightliner something like $200-300 to hook up their laptop and force a regen which I assume is after the DPF sensors trip and the truck goes into a limp mode.

The Question(s): Is there a tuner that can trigger a dealership style regen?
Should we be monitoring DPF temps and if so how?
My own question: Is there a actual underlying mechanical issue that we should be trying to look for instead?

My own searches have lead me to Bully Dog who after months of trying to talk to someone who knows anything about their Heavy Truck tuners finally said that they no longer can legally do this with their equipment. Alternatives are either hyper generic "Fits all makes and models" devices from companies that you can't find even a office building for, or something like the OTR Reset tool which seems more legit but still seems well within the realm of snake oil.

Hope this makes sense and that someone can help me so I can pass it along to my father.

OTR unit works quite well to regen/clear codes.

Is his engine running colder then normal ? The engine has to be running hotter then old non emissions engines. That was a problem when DPD filters were first put on trucks. They were not running hot enough to keep the DPF filter burning the soot when driving down the road.

Seems like freightliner should fix his truck. Maybe his DPF filter needs to be cleaned. They get full and even a parked Regen won't burn the ash off the filter.

From what he has reported back its running about 190-205F on the road here in Kansas so I can't exactly say if that is on the cool end or not but I do know that is a fair bit warmer than say your average car (180-190F).

On the filter is there a way we can visually check it to see if it is getting close to being clogged or does it require a full disassembly?

190-205 is the new normal range. That sounds good. Their is another part to the active Regen when going down the road. Right behind or past the turbo their is another diesel injector. It's not like injector in the engine it just opens to spray diesel in the hot exhaust pipe. It's probably more used in the winter. I don't know the spec on it. From my understanding it spay diesel in the exhaust when driving to help burn the soot off if needed.

Their is another injector called the 7th injector that one is in the emissions box and it used for parked Regen. I'm not emissions expert but since the parked Regen seems to work good. I'm guessing it could be that part behind turbo might not be opening and putting diesel into exhaust when driving down the road.

If it a 2016 truck and never had DPF filter cleaned It could be that. I think 400,000-500,000 is when they have to cleaned. Freightliner would probably recommend that be cleaned I would think if no fault codes are in the system.

Company like Pittsburgh Power who repairs emission systems trucks recommend a cleaning every 250,000 miles. They use a system call Diesel Force Cleaning. It's foam stuff they pump thru engine and emissions system it cleans everything back to like new. The sensors get soot on them and they send the wrong information to the computers that run the emissions system. The DPF has two pressure sensors. One is before the DPF and the second is after DPF. The computers measure the pressure difference and that's how it knows how full the DPF filter is getting. Then the system will do Active Regen going down the road or if parked and idling all night or day. Then the system will do a Parked Regen using that 7th injector to pump diesel into emissions box and light it on fire to get the DPF filter up to about 1,000F. So it hart to tell without the computer hooked to to see what the two sensors are showing as pressure and to see temperature of the emissions system. They have spec for all that. Maybe the emissions box is not getting hot enough driving down the road and DPF is not getting hot enough to burn the soot into ash. Maybe the DPF has lots of miles and just needs to be cleaned because it only hold so much ash after 400,000+ miles. Maybe the two pressure sensors are sending wrong information to the computer
