I’m an older driver, 48, starting my last career. I’ve been a mechanic most of my life and sick of doing it, I’m almost done with CDL school an am looking for advice on my first trucking job. A couple places my instructor mentioned are Franks Vacuum Service (they don’t service vacuums, lol), Leonard’s, Saia, Estes, JB Hunt (says they need 3 months experience?), Amazon, Midwest Transport, XPO. Work life balance is more important than money, I am going to take a big pay cut anywhere I go for the first year or so anyway.

so I’m wondering if anyone has local experience in any of these companies, or know some I didn’t mention. At my current job I talked to an XPO driver and he said I would likely be doing line haul there as a new driver, and he was explaining it to me like I would hate it, driving at night, driving from terminal to terminal, and I’m thinking, that sounds great! I’m not looking for OTR. Something where I’m home several times a week, or every week. A place I can learn the business and determine if I want to buy my own truck or not after a year or 2.

Line Haul is a coveted job; don't let anyone talk you out of it.
Those companies with Line Haul also have City P&D which is Pick up & Delivery in the city which means you spend your working career fighting city traffic.

Make sure you have all the endorsements.
Line haul jobs require you have doubles/triples, tanker and hazmat endorsements.

    • Class A CDL or willingness to obtain a license
    • Need endorsements: doubles/triples, tanker, hazmat.
Local and linehaul driver positions available!
As a Yellow linehaul driver, you’ll enjoy great home time and 100% no-touch freight. Yellow is a terminal-to-terminal operation, so you’ll never drop off at a customer site, and for non-sleeper teams, you’ll sleep in a company-paid hotel for overnights.
We offer 100% paid health benefits for you and your family.

Xpo would be a short linehaul run followed by 6-8 hours of dock work then a short drive back to your terminal. Your best bet would be p&d if you want to have a 9-5 mon-fri schedule.
