I’m an older driver, 48, starting my last career. I’ve been a mechanic most of my life and sick of doing it, I’m almost done with CDL school an am looking for advice on my first trucking job. A couple places my instructor mentioned are Franks Vacuum Service (they don’t service vacuums, lol), Leonard’s, Saia, Estes, JB Hunt (says they need 3 months experience?), Amazon, Midwest Transport, XPO. Work life balance is more important than money, I am going to take a big pay cut anywhere I go for the first year or so anyway.
so I’m wondering if anyone has local experience in any of these companies, or know some I didn’t mention. At my current job I talked to an XPO driver and he said I would likely be doing line haul there as a new driver, and he was explaining it to me like I would hate it, driving at night, driving from terminal to terminal, and I’m thinking, that sounds great! I’m not looking for OTR. Something where I’m home several times a week, or every week. A place I can learn the business and determine if I want to buy my own truck or not after a year or 2.
