Indeed. Drivers must get a lot of heat from the 4 wheelers. I don't really get it. When I drive my car, I like to keep my distance from semis. I don't think the general public has an appreciation of the mass involved in a tractor trailer vs car. If they were toys, it would be an 80 lb toy vs a 4 lb toy, it might be a better visual if the public thought of it that way.

 

I got contacted by a driver trainer finally. He sounds pretty cool, easy to understand and communicate with..So awesome! We meet tonight at about 1:30 AM, leave from Fontana Ca headed to Phoenix then off to N. Carolina. Training should take about 2 weeks. It's happening, I am very excited.

My driver trainer had contacted me I think Wednesday early afternoon about meeting early in the morning. I met with him at 2AM at Fontana, we left for a terminal at 3AM and started headed towards phoenix at about 5:00 AM or so. I drove for about 3 hours, but I somewhat sleep deprived at this time as it had been about 24 hours since I had woken up from my last sleep. The driver trainer said we would split the sleeper berth time and he took over, I was to sleep in the top bunk while he continued to drive to Phoenix. I had brougth too much luggage which was all stacked in the top bunk, I barely fit up there. As he was driving the rough bouncing up and down, rocking back and forth,swinging side to side was quite rough and I realized there was no way I was going to be able to sleep. I tried for 2 hours laying there,the ride was too rough. We were going to do 14 days of this, non stop team driving (which I never really wanted to do but this was what I could get). I told the driver trainer there was no way I was going to be able to do this because there was no way I could sleep under these circumstances. I am back home now, not really happy about the situation at all, feeling pretty low to say the least.

Ideal would be a training situation where you train with trainer during the HOS,then the truck stops and you sleep either in the truck not moving, at a truck stop or similar, or at a hotel/motel. I thought they used to do it this way. Is this no longer the practice?

 

Oh also, my advice to a new that will train in a team driving situation...PACK LIGHT! Don't worry about wearing the same clothes several days. Pack as light as you possibly can.
