I received my Class A back in late March of this year with all endorsements and have since been working steady at my non driving job and staying around to care for my grandmother who has fallen ill. I am worried about companies not accepting me because of a gap in training since school. I don't know if there is any truth to something like this since I have read stories of guys sitting on their licenses for years and still getting a job. Can anyone shoot me straight as far as how serious something like this is? Just trying to ease my mind. I appreciate anyone willing to give input! Also, I have been looking at mega carriers like Schneider or Prime to start with.

A neighbor of mine graduated from CDL school, then went into a different occupation; not driving.
10 years later he decided to drive trucks and had no trouble at all finding a job.
He went with Reddaway.
Keep your DOT Medical Card up to date and you won't have any problems being hired by a trucking company.Another Canadian driver, Zoltan1a, firemedic2816 and 2 others Thank this. -
Why not apply for local jobs so you can use your CDL and be home?

I got my CDL in May of 2017.
I started driving for Schneider in March of 2019.
Yes....some companies may get their panties all in a wad over your time "gap".
Others....will not.
Your takeaway?
Shop around--it's very much a driver's job market right now.
Based on what I'm seeing--I predict it will become even moreso in the future.

One driver on this forum hadn't driven in 21 years, but kept his cdl and DOT Medical Card current.
Abilene Motor Express hired him.

We have local positions for CDL grads, fresh or otherwise. No experience requirements... but it is driving a spotter truck at different facilities we service. Meanwhile our Regional Fleet requires 9 months' experience, minimum.

Abilene Motor Express is in Richmond. It's an OTR company, but probably have some local work picking up loads for the OTR drivers.
