One of the senior drivers at our terminal said that he has never seen a driver get laid off because of the economy. I just hope Estes starts offering a Roth 401K soon.

Not going to add anything useful, but just a personal opinion.

I don't understand why there is so much hate towards the residentials? I understand some are challenging to get into while others have the homeowner confront you with unrealistic expectations. But for the most part they aren't all that bad.

Usually for me (like today) I got assigned the lone working liftgate trailer to run a route. 12 stops with not a dock or forklift in sight. It kills the monotony of bumping docks, waiting to get unloaded, or God forbid one of the weenies from the competition is dock blocking you. My travel agent also eases off of me on pickups. So I literally just have to clear my delivery workflow.

The other benefit is, you are dealing with people that are looking forward to their crap. You are bringing little Timmy's swing set, not 15 pallets that some bloke in the warehouse now has to inventory 30 minutes before closing time. There is way less stress since you won't battle the clock. I've done deliveries as late as 9 PM. And if you do get there early, a lot of times nobody is home and my dispatcher, the customer, and myself come to the same consensus to leave it infront or in the garage.

I really enjoy it and I wish management would just keep me on a liftgate bid.

Hey road_runner. I agree some residentials are nice. Around here you are likely to have a lot of hills to contend with. It would be a lot easier on flat lands. We have to deliver the over-length freight on 4 foot liftgates. Those can be really tough. It seems like most of them are over length.

    road_runner Thanks this.

That's a fair argument. If your equipment is not set up properly, your stop is going to suck and it will be tedious to get things off.

We just had our old rusty steel plated gates replaced with lightweight aluminum gates that extend about 6 feet.

If 90% of your struggle is to get the freight down to ground level, I can totally see how shoddy equipment will make your job rough.

Courtesy is to clear your freight, move out of the dock and then clear your paperwork, computer workflow, or Google map your next stop.

But nope. Some decide to make phone calls or take their lunch right there where they sit. It's absolutely asinine.

OP, do you know what your 401k administrator charges in fees?

I recently did some homework on this and have come to the following hierarchy of retirement funding accounts, based on lowest fees to highest fees.

    1. ROTH IRA with vanguard. Fees almost nil.
    2. Health Savings Account (HSA). Fees? It varies from place to place but I'm paying (with Associated Bank) flat monthly maintenance fees adding up to about $7 per month. $84/year. No % "fees" on yours investment gains. You keep those! Max contribution is $3650/year.
    3. And it's a distant third, is my 401K. Because the fees are based on the size of your investments, ie. if you have a great year in the stock market, congrats, your $100k in the 401k just got chopped down to $98.3k, because of fees. In one year. It's insane. We're talking tens of thousands of dollars paid in fees before you ever draw a dollar out (I'm assuming you're young since you're asking about ROTH). The fees are the same on pre-tax and Roth side. That's how it is at Transamerica anyways.

It gets tricky if you have a company match, that probably tilts the scale in favor of funding the 401k ahead of the others. But after you've used up the full matching %, get the hell out of the 401k.
