I was at the Corrin UT Walmart DC and the yard is packed with Swift trucks. It's been this way for awhile So they probably think they're safe. But.I've seen this before and Walmart drivers are one beancounter's bright idea away from shutting down.
I worked for Beneto who got bought out by KAG West out of San Jose CA and we parked in the Chevron yard. This went on for along time, at least a decade that I knew of. KAG is kinda the Swift of the fuel industry and as soon as they came in with the cut rates Chevron's days were numbered.
At first no one thought that Chevron would get rid of their drivers. They had a good union contract with great pay and benefits and loyal drivers that would spend a decade working nights and weekends before getting a chance to have normal time with their family. All with the promises of a great future and retirement if they would just stick it out. Everyone also thought that having their own trucks keeps all the subhaulers in line. But it didn't quite work out that way.
Chevron was able to get rid of the "Transportation Division" and all its associated cost and liability by switching to subhaulers solely. If a load was late, wrong, damaged or the truck was in an accident, who cares, fine the carrier and move on. No loss revenue to Chevron. And if a carrier gets uppity Chevron can tell them to get all of their trucks out of there yard because they are giving the contract to someone else. Great way to keep rates down.
I was thinking about applying to Walmart. Frankly it looks like a great deal. But dang it if this doesn't look a tad too familiar.
What do y'all think?
How long before Swift replaces Walmart drivers‽

Isnt that why all the Walmart drivers work for the transportation division so any accidents can't be blamed on Walmart. Sue the transportation division they aren't worth anything. I think it started years ago when the driver drifted onto the shoulder up in Maine and ran over the car load of girls.

Will never happen. Wal-Mart is too big for one carrier...or two....or three.

So is Chevron. That's why they have a bunch of subhaulers fighting each other for a bigger piece of that great big ol' pie.
Swift, CR England and the rest of the Mega's will gobble up the work between themselves. The sheer volume of freight will make up for the low rates and keep OO and small carriers away from the trough.Another Canadian driver and truckdriver31 Thank this. -
I work for tyson foods and we have a lot of carriers hauling our trailers. They are covering loads we cant cover and saving tyson from paying extra for market rate

They were opening a driver training center up in Seymour last I heard to do the north Midwest/east district.
I'd say you don't have to worry about anything until they start fully automating the dcs. Which they publicly have stated they have full intentions on doing. With fully driverless trucks.
That won't be until 2030 at the earliest.
So plenty of time to make your million and find something else to do.Another Canadian driver and truckdriver31 Thank this. -
That's why walmart has been hiring drivers. They want to get rid of the dedicated carriers like Swift Crete etc.
Another Canadian driver, truckdriver31 and kylefitzy Thank this. -
Being that Swift has a terminal at Corrin it makes sense that you'd see that Walmart flooded with Swift trucks.
Another Canadian driver and truckdriver31 Thank this.
