Flatbed from Ohio to New York pays more than JB hunt Van Load from Washington to New York lol.
Of course you'll have to dodge 37 low bridges with the NYC one.

In one of @blairandgretchen interviews someone made a really good point about building relationships with a few brokers that have steady freight in your area. Like if you don't want steady contract #### dictating what you do and when you do it. The relationship building aspect should of been high up on the list a while ago. You knew these rates weren't going to last.
When the getting was good you should've been building those relationships. If you don't stand out from the rest how can you expect to get the best? Especially in bad times?
Are you the type to cancel because you found a slightly better paying load after already committing yourself and your reputation? Why would the broker use you again. Incase you forgot it was your choice in the 1st place to use them.
Did you stand out enough to get the agent's personal cell phone to call after hours directly if there's any hiccups? Or when your agent gets a promotion and doesn't even deal with booking #### anymore, does he still say "hey if you have any issues whatsoever don't hesitate to call me, I can get it sorted". Or get a a list of loads to choose from a week out.
If not then don't go blaming everything else, blame yourself. Even in a below average market the top performers will still do better than average. It's a fact. Just like if you're a driver at a mega. Sure a lot of them don't make squat but then there's the ones who make 100k + a year at a mega. It's just averages. If you don't find a way to stick out, "even in lowly van work", then why bother?
Seriously. By now you should have a few moves that don't make it on the load board unless you're not available.
And I'm not saying anything about the people on here who run it wild in no specific direction and make out really really well. Those are the guys I really haven't heard ##### at all and still manage to make it work. The 1 truck solo guys to the small fleet owners.
