I would have killed for a 318. If one has never driven a gasoline powered truck trying to pull a 45ft, you have not lived. 45 mph with no wind. Go through Gary, IN at that speed on I 80 and report back….
New drivers will be shocked at how much 42,000 lbs will pull even a good running truck down in the hills.
No, jake…I have run out of CA with a heavy load with one not working. Just have to be smarter than the truck and the hills.
I have seen many complainers over the years and they all have one thing in common….they are always looking for work. Whoops, 2 things..they are always miserable.
Not sure about this company.

And this thread is a prime examole if what is wrong with the world these days. An experienced hand used to be able to tell someone to "man up" or "quit your whining" and they would take that as a sign that maybe they were over thinking things. Or they would realize they had been looking at things through rose colored glasses and then they would knuckle down and put in the work to become a good experienced hand themselves. Now days to many folks get all defensive and on the fight as soon as their idealisms gets put in check... That would have got me smacked when I was younger. I would have deserved it, and it would have made me try harder to be better.

You know that chip on your shoulder isn't going to do you any favors no matter where you go. Lighten up a little bit.
YumDinger, GreenPete359 and JoeyJunk Thank this. -
Are you not allowed to take the truck home or is nobody allowed to take the truck home? The flatbed company I worked at for 10 years made everyone park at the yard on the weekends so trucks could be serviced and washed. If it’s everyone it’s not a red flag, if it’s just you then it kind of sucks. You have to decide where your line is.
Mismatched steer tires would drive me crazy but if they’re both legal then it’s not a red flag.
The worst part about all of it in my book is you chose to work for load pay when you have no control over your loads. As you found out, it’s pretty easy for them to play favorites and give the new guy a lower paying load.Rugerfan, GreenPete359 and JoeyJunk Thank this. -
The mismatched steers seemed cheap of them and I asked them to replace the worn one, and they would not. The truck pulled to the right side a bit and I would reason that the mismatched steers was the cause. Like you said, bothersome but not a red flag in and of itself.
The whole company is load % pay, no option to choose mileage pay. The company also does not offer tarp pay and every load I ran, even with my trainer required tarping. -
I think BOTH "sides" of this discussion have made some good points.
In any case--@jmarc77--if you do decide to swap employers--better luck next time with Melton, Maverick, R E West...or similar.
I just don't see you having these same problems with one of the (other) established "starter" flatbed carriers.
Suggestion: avoid TMC. Yes, those shiny black, dual-stack Petes are sexy--but life there is just a bit too much like the military.
