just got accepted by a local company to drive for them. This is my first job as a CDL a driver and I have 0 experience other than trucking school. They said I have to do a road test @ orientation. Is this standard for most companies? If so, what does it consist of?

    austinmike and Boondock Thank this.

Yes it's standard. Just don't hit anything and stop for the red lights and you will be fine.

And don’t grab phone and going to answering calls, or texting if it rings.
Once failed a dude for that. (reading then answering text while driving.)

Some other driver who is an "expert" will be asked to take you out for a drive and assess your driving capabilities. I remember my first time fortunately our company used its trucks to shuttle, Schreiber Cheese between processing plants, and also Malto Meal cereal between, Tremonton and Salt Lake City, so they got to watch our driving skills and our backing onto dock skills. If was a bit of test too as I'd never driven a 379 Pete their perfect moving forward but a real task when backing onto docks. Anyway I guess they figured if you can back up onto a dock in a Pete, you certainly qualify to back up in everything else.

And don't show up hungover smelling like a rotten brewery or drink a gallon of coffee before you get there. You want to be calm cool and feeling good.

    Don't hit a curb making a turn.
    Check you mirrors constantly.
No rolling stops at traffic lights and stop signs.

I had to do a driving test for my part time job it was a piece of cake. There main concern was that I could shift the truck and make somewhat of a tight turn with the truck and trailer. Apparently they had a number of people apply that could not shift a manual transmission.

The Company Orientation will Clarify Exactly what they require.
They're NOT wanting to make you nervous, you'll do that on your own, it's normal.

Every New Driver has to do a Road Test during orientation which means you'll not be alone in the Truck on a specified route (from what my 63 year young mind can recall), and should be much easier with an Auto Shift Truck, compared to a Manual.
They want to see what you're capable of doing as not every applicant at every Company Orientation is accepted.

Usually Drug Test Results eliminate some contestants.

Expect a road test anytime you apply/start at a different company, no matter how much experience you have. They generally are just looking for safe driving habits and adequate backing skills.
