Taking the truck home for extended days off?

    Yeah that’s the route I’ve decided to go. I just get tired of the five hour commute each direction. But overall I’m happy with the way I run for this company. Of course I could find a closer job. There’s literally hundreds of them. I filled out one of those short apps on indeed listing just my experience and record and a few things and I literally get 20 emails a day with job offers. But as trucking goes, when you’re comfortable where you’re at, that goes for a long way over a little more pay.

    my original point was if I bring the truck home, there’s less opportunities throughout the year for me to take extra time off because they’ll start squawking about it because they won’t be able to use the truck. Which of course I understand. It’s their truck. As for maintenance, I stay out usually around three weeks and I land at the yard at least once during those three weeks and if the truck needs anything I just pull right up to the shop.

    How can the truck make revenue if it's sitting at the drivers home for a week ? Scenario.....trucks at the terminal are at a minimum, a truck breaks down, co. needs to move that load, but no ready trucks, however there is a truck sitting in a drivers driveway for the week while driver is relaxing. Now mind you, a trucking co. is in the business of transporting, not in the business of catering to drivers "wants". Any co I ever worked for always said clean out your truck if taking more than 3 days off, because, THEY MAY NEED TO USE THE TRUCK ! ! I always loved it when my truck broke down under a load at the terminal, dispatch put me in an off duty drivers truck with all his stuff in it, and I didn't get back to terminal for a week ! Can you say pissed of driver ?

    Yep, that’s why I’m not doing it. Fully understand it’s their truck and it’s there to make money for the company. But I as a human being I’m not gonna run for a year straight just taking resets. Lol occasionally a few times a year I’m going to take extra time off. And if I bring the truck home that’s probably gonna be a huge hassle and I’ll have to pay for transportation back home because my vehicle won’t be at the yard. So I’m just gonna find me an old Clunker to commute back-and-forth in.

    Man you guys put up with too much abuse for these ####ty companies. Take more then 3 days off and you have to clean your truck out? So someone else can use it?

    My truck sits in my driveway on home time. No mater of its 1 day or 15 days. I might consider leaving my truck at the yard if they had a shop, but the closest company shop is 2000 miles away.

    The guys that do leave their trucks at the yard don’t have to worry about someone else driving them.

    How can it cost $450 to make a one-way trip? You can rent a car for $40 per day.

    Being able to bring the truck home is not a generous benefit. It's a major PIA eventually.

    I can't think of anything helpful to suggest. I've been recommending new drivers avoid working for companies that don't have yards within easy commuting distance of your home. "Bringing the truck home" seems like a generous company benefit until ANYTHING happens. Leaving the truck at the company yard also means the company has no excuse for not doing repairs. Bringing the truck home means the driver has to sit and wait for some random truck stop shop to fix or maintain their truck in the middle of the week, while the driver is unpaid, and the waiting list is only 12 trucks long.

    Toyota is better than Honda.
    Better design, lower parts price, cheaper to repair or maintain.
    Boring and bland but reliable up to Yin/Yang.
