Ok so last year my compressor clutch went out (sanden style) So I got a new compressor drier and expansion valve and 2 new hoes. AC worked great 35⁰ to 40⁰ air at the vents all day beforereplacing. After replacing I had 40⁰ to 45⁰ air all day. Winter hits and heater core goes out so while I was in there I put the evapor in there too. Spring rolls around air it works but not great now it's hot and won't keep up I have taken it to a shop and they said its because the fan clutch is welded ( done by previous owner). What am I missing???? Also in Spring the thermo cut out went out and has been replaced. Now the best I get is 70⁰ going down the road 1988 westernstar with big cam
AC Won't cool

Buy a new thermo and put it in, you may have gotten a bad one?
n4ane Thanks this. -
baha Thanks this.

I think you should wait until you put in the new temp controller and see if that works before you have to spend the $ on new freon from breaking open the system to replace the ex. valve?
Rideandrepair and n4ane Thank this. -

How much refrigerant is in the system and how did you get that number? It's very possible it's leaking out slowly.

Be sure when you are bending the temperature sensor on the end of it that sticks into evap. that you tape it so it doesn't rub on the heater box and put a rubber seal where it leaves the box so it can't rub? You can buy a fancy lower price freon leak ck sniffer at Ebay,
but take the battery out of it when you're not using it and it will last much longer?Last edited: Jul 12, 2022

Need to throw some gauges on it. If the TEV is messed up, the high side should skyrocket all the way to the max. Otherwise, I bet it just needs charged. Now that's if the compressor is even engaging. If it isn't, it could be empty of freon, or about ten other things that are above my pay grade.Rideandrepair, n4ane and ProfessionalNoticer Thank this. -
Indeed. He could of slightly pinched an o ring or pulled a thread after over tightening a line, evap could have been faulty straight from the shop etc etc to cause a small leak. I just found one on my condenser with a cheap 25 dollar sniffer from Amazon. Worth every penny!
If it's totally empty to where the clutch won't kick on you can jump the low pressure switch or manually power it off another source like the trinary switch.Rideandrepair, n4ane and God prefers Diesels Thank this.
