Yes, that is correct. But more than likely your drivers license expires in 4 years on your birthday. Now look at the back of your license and you will see your hazmat expires exactly 5 years to the day that it was issued. Probably before the rest of your license expires on your birthday. The difference in the expiration dates is what is getting a lot of guys in trouble.

Still waiting on my TSA haz mat assessment to be sent over to state's DMV for my license renewal that took place March 8th.
Called several times and am told it's still under review and TSA has a substantial backlog.
State tells me after June 8 I need to get another 30 day extension, and after second extension expires they cancel and refund my money and would need to start process over.
Went to fingerprint center (identigo) and told em I wanted to pay again and take new prints and submit application again and they made some calls and said I couldn't. Was told it's being processed and just wait...WTF!

Unrelated but went for my DOT physical today, got my 2 year card but a moot point if the feds don't wake up soon.

The difference between test date on my HM and the expiration date of my CDL WAS NOT the issue in my case. It maybe be the issue in some cases, but assuming the difference between the CDL expiration and the HM expiration date is not the issue that caused the problem in my case and won't protect others. MY CDL was canceled 1-2 months BEFORE ANY EXPIRATION DATE printed ANYWHERE (front/back) on CDL.

Your point applies to your state's licensing, obviously, but here in Michigan, it's every 4 years, as per the TSA site:

In our case we never get the 5 years, and my TWIC expires every 5 years, but this year, it expires before my licensing, and I just reapplied for it and asked if my applying for the TWIC now get's me a discount on my HME which I was also applying for. She just looked at me, and I said I didn't think so, but it didn't hurt to ask. :)
That said, when you do discounted one, it expires when the other one does, so you don't get a full 5 years if you take the discounted one on those off years...so anyone that lives in a 4 year license state...it doesn't matter, you need to redo it every 4 years, period.

so my understanding is your threat assessment is good for 5 years. however that assessment will expire when your license renews.

example. my current assesment is good until next year. my license expires next week. I cannot renew my license using the existing assesent. it will not carry over.

further, my state now offers 8 yr licensing for both cdl and passenger. BUT can only get a 4 yr cdl with the hazmat endorsement due to 5 yr assessment expiration.....

My Fingerprints was 5 years. Which fell in the middle of my 5 year license.

The questions. Was everytime with license renewal.

Every 2 1/2 years I'm either testing or Fingerprints.

I got rid of it now.

    WOW.

So my license expires TODAY. Been sweating this assessment not coming back in time.

Last week , I involved my Congressman. Get a call yesterday from his staff.
Sorry have been calling tsa everyday, no response other than its being reviewed....

Wake up to use bathroom, old man bladder, check email for giggles....

At 0435 I received email noting approval for HME...... 47 days after submitting prints....

No idea if involving my Rep helped but for those waiting , it cant hurt, can it?

Its a online test here every 3 years, costs around $10 or $20. Not attached to license at all.
