    1. So when you drive a CMV, say from Cali to NY. No load booked, just driving for say a truck show. You still need to log those miles for IFTA?

    2. Probably a question for the DMV, but can you dual register a vehicle?

    3. I will be getting a pre-pass. Already approved. I will have BOL's for whatever I am hauling but not for my own property as stated on the FMCSA website. But this also has me wondering. How do you convey its your property and your not hauling it for money? Will I have to show the title of my mud truck in my name to every scale house that wants it?

    4. That seems like a grey area since there is no definition of PC like in Canada. Based on current FMCSA ruling, I could technically PC from Cali to NY.

Backwards, because 99% of trucks are used to deliver freight for profit, period. Not some older gentleman in his glory years fulfilling a bucketlist. Same can be said that I'm using it for commercial use. I can drive it from Cali to NY and back 20 times without ever hauling anything. That is all PC use.

once again. If it’s a registered cmv it has to follow log book rules.

DOT only cares if it’s registered as a CMV and your truck will be registered as a cmv unless you have it registered as an RV or personal vehicle. Dual registration I can’t say if your dmv will do it.

now back to the scales. Just because you have pre pass doesn’t mean you won’t get stopped or pulled into scales. I have one and I’ve been pulled in 5 times this year alone and only driven 4 months.

I say pc and find out but your going to get a lot of different answers, and when you tell the DOT officer in California that the DOT officer told you in let’s say Kentucky and it differs? Guess what your going to be on a losing end.

DOT is looking for anything just to issue citations.

    good luck.

Just run the eld all the time, much simpler. And yes all miles traveled in a CMV need to be tracked for ifta

In terms of ELD's. Is PC the only option available when driving a CMV while off-duty or is there other types of off-duty driving?

I do want to run the ELD all the time. Just don't want my clock to be hit if I do a load. Then travel 8 hours after delivery with no load booked to go see Mt. Rushmore and then a few hours after my tour, find a load that is 2 hours away with a 13 hour eta to destination. The time spent between delivery of the 1st load and before booking my 2nd load shouldn't affect my working hours.

Even if you could legally log moving the vehicle off duty, you still have to be "well rested" before beginning to drive. With the example you gave, if you are ever involved in an incident, regardless of fault you will find yourself on criminal charges.

Before anything, that guys CDL was suspended so he shouldn't have been driving regardless.

Also, the times I gave in my "example" are just eta driving times to places for my theories, not actual event times. Things like sleeping, eating, bathroom etc will all naturally occur between each major event. I'm not looking to drive without adequate sleep to make deadlines. Just don't want to spend a 34 hour reset at a truckstop in KS because I spent the whole week looking at landmarks with 0 loads booked and all my driving was personal use.

If you got all this money like you say you do, why are you worried about the DOT?

    Run that thing.

LOL! I would like a decent safety rating and not have my DOT number suspended!

I will just use PC and keep records that the load was booked after my leisure tour if that is what actually happens at that point in time. If I have a load booked but a point of interest is on the way then I will still use on-duty time because I am driving for the load.
