Why would you buy a used one, especially since you are looking for longevity? Somethings you can buy used, a used truck, used tire, but NEVER a used internal engine component. Replace it with a new Cat OEM.

Yeah, I agree. I was under the impression that it would need replaced at overhaul anyways, so I figured I'd throw a used one in there until overhaul time. But it sounds like they don't replace the head components if they are still in good shape. I figured it would be wasted money going with new if it needed replaced again someday soon. The ecm shows 800,000 plus, so I'm hoping to get to the 1,000,000 mark. But maybe that's wishful thinking?!? I'm half tempted to pull the head and do an inframe while I've got it torn apart.

Even the platinum kit does not come with a cam, that is something extra. Even the front cover kit is not included in the platinum kit.

Is atldiesel.com a trusted supplier? Also is the 0R7653 from cat a reman? Or does that just mean they require my core back?

Cat pretty much wants cores on everything to limit the competition. They probably through stuff like rocker arms in the trash. That Cat cam is probably new but from where, China?
I have had same guys buy cams from ATL and they look good, still running. Reserved but I have a brother that is a VW nut. He had a 1.7L stroked and the head was $2,200 about 28 years ago It had two duel side draft 40 MM Maconnies ( like a Webber ). It would run up to around 100 MPH in third and had two left. The folks that did the crank used a welding process to built the crank and then ground it to the longer stroke. That scarred the crap out of me but they said it was good for 8,000 RPM. Not just a shift point but all day long. It was fun to drive. I thank they redo cams about the same way.
