What would you do if you can't do CDL job any longer, and you ain't young no more?

My son moved to live with his girlfriend last year and hired on with a large security company. He's working security at one of Google's server farms making $28 an hour. He started off just walking about 5 miles a day between the buildings, and now he drives a shuttle bus picking up employees at the main gate and taking them to one of the server buildings. I thought it was kind of a sweet gig that would be suitable for a retired trucker.

 

12 ounce curls in the man cave , we are brainwashed to work our lives away , take the grand kids camping or fishing , buy a Vienna Beef hot dog cart and winter in Port St Lucie.
I found a blessing here in Wisconsin on one of the oldest farms in the state as his right hand man a couple times a week , good people , id do it for free , Dont! tell them that!

What you have done before has no bearing on what you might do next.

You talk about taking a couple of months to learn a new trade, like that is a long time.
Is that all you are willing to invest when you are also talking about another 15-20 years of working?

Way back when, I was a waiter and bartender.
The manager at the restaurant got mad at her computer and threw it across the room, breaking it.
I took that broken computer home to see if I could fix it, and over several months learned a lot about computers.
Over the next couple years I took a few CC courses in computers and networking.
That led to a computer tech job in Japan, then to a small computer store in CO where I built 30k high end video editing workstations for nearly a decade.

Then, at 55, I started driving trucks.

It isn't about just a couple months.
It is about finding something you are interested enough in to devote some long term time to learning and advancing in.

You have another 20 years worth of work left in you until you retire?
Then spend a few years learning something, and you will have your next 15 year career to retire from.

 

Yes my brother did that a while, he enjoyed it but said it was a pain too...he ended up selling off all of his equipment. I did broadcast radio on and off from 86 to 2008. I loved it but barely ever made over minimum wage. The radio DJ craft is going the way of the dinosaur. When I started I was spinning records. It progressed to CD's then the last two stations I worked at it was all going computer and automation. I considered doing karaoke but that would involve a lot of late nights at bars and drunks. Maybe a few wedding and events here and there.

Most retired truckers would struggle to walk 5 miles in a week, much less every day.

 

Yeah I agree, many would struggle with that. But there are many who wouldn't. I was thinking the shuttle bus part would be the best gig for retired truckers. My son is only 32 and a big boy, so the walking part was good for keeping him in better shape.

 

I'm 62, retired, and thinking about taking my social security early instead of waiting until I'm 67. Reason is I need it to show an income for tax purposes. Here in California, I'm on the Obamacare plan and get the federal subsidies. Even with that, health coverage for my wife and I cost around $1,000 per month, but without the subsidies it would be around $3,500 per month. All of the dividends from my stock investments get reinvested into stock, so for tax purposes I have no income. If I don't have an income, I don't qualify for the Obamacare, so I need to show some kind of income, and the social security should be just enough. If I live until around 81, I'll actually make more from social security than waiting until age 67. Ironic how that works.

 

I could do real estate kinda easy but have to have contractors
