Coolant loss no extenal leaks

If that's the case I would expect there to be pink residue all over the engine. External leaks are usually pretty obvious.

I had a mystery coolant loss problem about a year ago. I pulled the crossover pipe off twice looking for an EGR cooler leak and saw nothing. Then a mechanic pulled it off and we say lots of coolant. What happens is leaking EGR cooler passes pressure into the cooling syystem when the engine is running. Then when the engine is stopped there is still pressure in the cooling system so coolant is pushed back through the same crack. When you start the engine the coolant gets swept into the crossover pipe, but once that coolant passes the crossover pipe dries up.

 

After I thought I had it fixed it got worse.
Left out last Monday and it started drinking a gallon and a half of coolant a day!
I also started loosing oil pressure which I believe are 2 different issues.
So canceled the rest of my loads for the week and limped it home. Dropped it off at Detriot. Hoping to hear from them tomorrow.

 

If you're not seeing milky oil in the crankcase or transmission and you aren't seeing an external leak, then that volume of coolant has to be getting burned through the cylinders. That's either an EGR cooler, a bad liner, or a bad head gasket. Coolant leaks due to a bad head gasket usually leak to the outside and you would be seeing it. A bad liner will usually leak enough coolant into the oil that you can't miss it.

Unfortunately, the loss of oil pressure can indeed be related to the coolant loss. Coolant contains sodium and potassium, which are abrasive. Excessive wear on the rods and mains will cause a loss of oil pressure.

Oil analysis is cheap. It will tell you right away if you are getting coolant in your oil. EGR leaks do cause a small amount of coolant to pass by the rings into the oil. It isn't enough to make the oil look contaminated but it will show up on an analysis. The price of the analysis is included when you buy the sample kit so sampling couldn't be easier. Just don't tell the local UPS franchise store that it's motor oil or they might say it's hazmat and refuse it. I tell them it's a water sample. UPS proper takes it no problem.

As of now I’m waiting to hear from shop to see what the damage is.
Sucks I haven’t put 10k miles on it since I bought it from dealer.

 

So I have a cracked liner.
What would cause this?

 

I'm afraid that's another bug hunt. One possibility is an over fueling injector.
How were they able to determine that it's a cracked liner? Bore scope?

 

That’s the question I’m going to ask them on Monday as to why it failed.
They stated one was bad and all the others were fine as they checked for any progressive damage and were unable to find none.
They did not elaborate how they determined it was bad “what method” they used.

 

06 frht columbia 14l Detroit pressure in coolant tank.losing water, I changed water pump,air compressor,thermostats,egr cooler.pressure tested to 15lbs, Leaked down 5lbs in 20 minutes.no visual sign of water leak. What could be the problem.

 

Could be EGR cooler or head gasket.
If you have pressure in tank that would point towards head gasket.
But there’s a lot of you tube videos on how to check the EGR cooler pipes for wetness which will confirm or eliminate that problem.

 

Hook up the tester again. Put 5 or 10 lbs. start Truck, see if it builds pressure. If it builds a lot fast, you’ll know it’s serious. Even if it builds pressure slowly, there’s a serious problem. Don’t let it keep building so high that it ruins the gauge.
