I was on a frigate headed to Africa and was standing watch on the port bridge wing when we spotted something.
It was at least half as big as the frigate. Looked like a storage tank for fuel or some other liquid. Could have been washed out to sea during a flood or sometimes ships will dump something like that to get rid of it, out of sight/out of mind.
Every year 500 to 1000 shipping containers lost or discarded at sea.

so many of those containers get washed overboard it ain't funny.
it's a major shipping hazard. -
As an offshore sailor, submerged shipping containers are the stuff of nightmares

Sometimes on US Navy ships we'd blast the containers with a .50 cal. machine gun. They would usually sink then.

Considering the couple of ships they've let burn and sink. Shouldn't be a mystery.
