Walmart rolls out ‘first of its kind’ 60-foot multi-temp reefer trailer

1. How much more does it weigh than your "normal" reefer?

2. Gotta be fun to back, especially with a sleeper cab.

 

Weight won't be as huge a factor here than the US. Most places we're allowed 17,000 kg (just under 37,500 lbs) on tandems. A lot, if not the majority, of trailers in Canada are tridems now too.

Wonder why they wouldn't run b-train or super b setups? Home Hardware has been running van combos like that for years. Probably a lot easier to handle than a single 60 footer.

 

Not sure why this is making such headlines now. They actually tried this out about 10 years ago. There’s was all kinds of talk about it then too.

Probably has something to do with running meat and produce loads from Grandview to Wasilla fairbanks and anchorage AK

 

I just recently saw a Frito Lay day cab in Dallas pulling a 59' van. I had to look it up and sure enough Texas allows up to 59' semi-trailers.

 

I'd be curious to see how the multi zone temp stuff works. I would assume it is a more sophisticated set up than just removable bulkheads. Anyway, also noticed they are using Carrier reefer units.

 

It will be interesting if corporations push for that trailer down here. Either way, same pay more work.

 

It looks like the Walmart guy in the first picture is about to get out his truck incorrectly. I thought those guys knew better.

 

Texas has allowed them for at least
20 years. It’s been that long since I worked for Frito and I pulled a few back then. For some reason they didn’t have a 59’ number on the front side of the trailer like the 53’ trailers did. They occasionally would mis load one for other states and sometimes they made it to the other state without being caught. I occasionally see the brand new trailers leaving Ky Manufacturing headed to their destination. They have to placard them with an oversize banner and permit to get them to Tx.
