What kind of machine is that? What's it used for ? Never seen something like that

Laying drain tile.

 

lol, I was coming back after "let's wait" for just that, to trade my cable for pipe.

I am not sure what it’s actually called but it’s for laying drain tile. It’s kinda like a Ferris wheel for dirt, the big round wheel has quite a few scoops on it that fill as they go down and back then when they get to top there’s a thing that scrapes the dirt out of the scoop and onto a conveyor. The pipe or cable or whatever it’s laying goes into the big boot deal on the back and then gets pushed down against the bottom of the trench and dirt gets scraped off the side of the trench to hold it in place until you backfill. It’s pretty cool to watch it work. I think it can go 7 feet deep and the trench is 18 inches wide. The bad part is it’s slooow and expensive to maintain. Our shop welded up all the gear teeth on the side of the wheel a couple years ago…. I think there’s approximately 350 total. And then grind them to match a gauge so things run smoothly. I couldn’t find any pictures of that project but I did find this one of welding a new socket into a dozer push arm Sorry it’s off topic but I think the picture when the weld is still red is pretty cool
