Correct, I work for a private fleet and we use 36’ and 48’ trailers all with rail gates. No point in dragging around more trailer than we need, especially with some of the tight spots we have to get in and out of.

Personally, I went with a 2010 53' Wabash Duraplate, food grade, and spring ride. I love the way the truck and trailer ride when I'm heavy but when I'm light, I have to keep it under 65 or else the load starts bouncing around in the very back. Air ride is nice but usually costs a little more.

Once you buy a van, try to take something very heavy to start with. This way you can scale the truck (full of fuel) and trailer and find the sweet spot of where the 5th wheel needs to be set and how far back you'd need to slide the trailer axles. Once you have that info, you won't need to adjust them much afterwards. I only have to move my trailer axles back about 5-7 holes when I have 40k+ past 45ft. Otherwise, they stay all the way forward.
