That is what I do. Been with the same bank since my paper route days, almost 50 years.
I've been approved half way into a conversation. I've been denied with a first sentence.
They know what I can afford better than I do.

Dealerships don’t suggest or push you toward a finance company because they’re helping you. The dealership is probably getting a flat fee or points on the backside. MHC Kenworth was one of the worst I dealt with. Back at the end of 2018 they had some new W9’s in Joplin. They kept saying I needed to fill out a credit app and I kept saying no. After about a week of back and forth and me wanting to wire them a deposit all the sudden the truck I wanted was gone and they had hold deposits on the others. Had my brother call about the truck I wanted and it was still there. They told him they had multiple new W9’s available, all they needed was a credit app to see what they could do for him.

So ive tried my bank as well as a couple dozen others including several suggested. The best rate i got was 18% with 45% down on the 49X. The first bank was 14% with 40% down or 21% at 25%. Irronicly i never talked to the dealer about fianceing at all. MHC kenworth kinda burned that bridge when i got my 579.

Honestly im leaning more and more towards the 379k i did try a bank that was suggested in a PM and with 35% down they will give me 6% on it instead of the 30% at 8% of my current bank. 125k is steep but it still has 3 years of warranty on a platinium rebuild left and less then 100k since the actual rebuild now that i see the actual paperwork.

Plus it is set up perfectly for what im doing already so no needing a bunch of work. Just get a full PM done on purchase to establish my own maintaince schedule and go. Lower insurance rates too by about 20%. Also called around and a big selling point is i can actully get parts for the engine if required. Even used ones if absolitely nessesary...not so much on the 49X most shops are saying as much as a 30 week wait on several common emissions failure parts and no option for used even and a lot of shops had a 4 to 5 week wait to even see it in the areas i drive through a lot. Worst wait on the 379k was 2 weeks for the main bearings less if i have them custom fabbed and most cats could see it within a week at most.

Very unusual for a bank to offer lower rates for used versus new, they know used is a riskier investment.
You are focusing on the 379 having a fresh engine, that’s the biggest mistake people make when looking at a used truck. $10’s and $20’s can add up to tens of thousands of dollars in one years time.

If you want the 379 then buy the 379, but I don’t think you are doing so with open eyes.

I finally got my 2023 and most are surprised because it took approximately 4 months even in a time dealerships were telling potential buyers there is a 1.5 to 2 year waiting list. I feel that its a balance of luck with timing and persistence towards wanting the truck because my dealer told me that even though they have have more orders then ever there are still a few monthly openings. I'm glad I went when I went or I would still be waiting working that previous crap job. Also, look for financing outside the dealership because even with my credit score being 833 and $5k initially down plus another $15k when the finance kicked in the dealship offered me 8.9% to 9.2% and this is back in May before interest rate went up in July. I went with a 3rd party finance company and closed it at 6.2% only 8 days ago. They told me people are paying 8.5% now. My bank told me 11% minimum possibly 12.5% even with a excellent credit score (they told me they don't care even if I put down $120k.

There's a lot b.s. even if you have 90% of the trucks costs they want want to rip you off on the financing in order of maximizing their profit.

Note: Prices already rose 10% more on the same truck (with the specs I ordered and possibly another 10% next year). When the dealer told me that the 2024 Peterbilt 379 truck is going to cost $300k (CAD) before taxes in Ontatio, Canada next year. I'm thinking they're trying to screen out the independent new O/O.

Perhaps but thats what they are offering. Applied to well over 30 banks now and its pretty universial on the 379K being lower.

As for wanting it....honestly yes and no. Im actully not fond of long noses and if i didnt know this particular truck would likely pass just for that. Yes it has a new engine or rather rebuilt one, but i know from bitter experince that aint the only thing to look at. Transmission, diffs, even stuff like airlines batterys and brakes make a HUGE diffrence and can stack them dollars high. The only reason im leaning so heavily towards it now is several factors such as parts avalibility, shop wait times, my personal knowledge of cat engines, the knowledge of this particular truck, the potential upcoming shortages on chips and DEF, the much broader backup plan and many other little things. I may have my eyes closed and if i do please let me know where i am missing things. I dont know everything and even dispite my 2 years as an O/O and decade of driving i learn new things on a regular basis.

As of right now however, knowing what i know and mathing it out the 379K seems the safer option if not nessesarraly the BEST option. Which is a key distinction here. With everything coming up in the air safer and good enough seems better then gambleing and perfect. Or in otherwords the perfect is the enemy of the good.

Like I recommended last time before your current truck, go with new.

My thoughts….the Pete might have a recently rebuilt engine, and you can work on a Cat and everything else you’ve said. But it has 800k on the chassis. That’s 800k on the rear ends, 800k on the fuel lines, 800k on all the air and electrical tied up in the frame rails, 800k on door strikers and latches and weather stripping, 800k on the motor mounts, 800k of water dripping down the windshield post right onto the fuse panel. What kind of shape is the frame in? How long until it needs sandblasted and painted from the sleeper back? If you start looking at all the little stuff it could very well need about $30k or so in little stuff over the next couple years, and then you’re $150k into a million mile truck with 300k on an overhaul at that point. For me to be interested they’d need to come down off their price a little bit. Used truck prices are falling as is, no need to give that much for an 800k truck anymore.

Those are very good points. Let me get with them on the truck and see if i can get answers on those i dont know after i think hard and write down all the major ones. I do know the answers to some though. The frame rail was recently repainted and resealed i think at the same time as the rebuild and as far as i can tell is at about 90-95% barring cosmetic damage from gravel roads, its actully in better shape then my 579 which i had done 3 months ago due to extensive rust on the frame. Weather stripping is all fairly new. It was done about a year ago along with the windshields and side windows. I remimber because bones loaned it to me and i #####ed about it leaking at the door. Motor mounts are specified as replaced in the rebuild sheet so should have less then 100k on them. Air lines and fuel lines are in dire need of replacment and are dry rotted, i was going to have them done along with a full PM at time of purchase. Cat quoted a full replacment of both at $1400 max and i was aware of it. Paint is shot and it will need a paintjob within 2 or 3 years or risk rust damage. Entire hood assembly is new along with headlights and entire front axle. Dot took my front end off in the fuel island a week after i started at bones as a company driver so the entire steering assembly is new and never gave me any problems.

    20200427_181753.jpg

It also has an entirely new power steering system. 2 weeks before i bought this truck (579) it blew out and was replaced and has less then 50k miles since the. But i am not trying to justify the truck just pass on what i do know so i can get informed advice. As i said i drove that truck for 2 years nearly and know it inside and out if it was ANY other truck i would hard pass. This one is diffrent due to how few miles are on it since i drove it and what i know has been done.
