I put a reman TRW box on. Instructions stated automatic poppet adjustment by turning it end to end a couple times while running. I did that. I decided to turn in the steering stops 1/4” each side, for starters. As it turned out, they were already in almost all the way. I turned the wheel each way, to the gear box stops. Instructions say a manual reset is needed, if decreasing wheel cut, I want to avoid doubt that. So I just turned the steering knuckle stops out, till they made contact, and an extra 1/4 turn to make sure. Then started it and turned it end to end a couple times. Everything seems fine. What do you guys think? Will if be ok? What if stops turned in, and only the steering stops were being used. Would it damage the gear?

I’ve always centered them on the ends of the travel in the box with the stops run in and set them after. I saw a few that didn’t center properly when the stops were messed up. I center them on the end of travel in the gear and then set the stops out a 1/2 turn of the bolt from end of travel.
They’ve always centered properly and blow over the relief set that way without travelling the box out. You’ll know on the road if the box centered properly or if it needs a reset.

I turned the right side out a good 3/8 or more. Not quite 1/2 turn to make sure it had solid contact. Drivers side only 1/4”, as I could tell it was solid contact. I was wondering if there’s a way to tell. They claim damage to the gear. They don’t say what kind of damage. I was hoping that leaving the cap off, if there’s a high pressure problem at full turn, it would push fluid, or some other way of telling. The way you do them seems to make sense. Same way I did. Good to know. Should be fine. Thanks.

40 pound pull on the steering wheel against the steering stop. Three times left and 3 times right. This is best done with no load on the system.

I’ll do that. 40 lbs pull, 3 x. Do I need to go back to center, or just let up a bit, between pulls?

Just pull it hard about 3 times on each side. So yes just let up between pulls.
