I'd like to know the ave age of those that think it won't happen VS the age of those that think it will happen. Net the younger believe it will while the older think the other way.

Actually 13 years, but who's counting...
And one thing I think you are missing, is that those self-driving vehicles that are out there right now are all on a very very well-defined map, and only drive in good weather. Basically it's not so much as self-driving, as it's a train on a road.

Will it happen? I'm sure it will eventually. But here's the kicker. It will take infrastructure change to do it as it cannot be solely the vehicle itself.
In the meantime, you likely will see stuff start happening like on triples with the tollways. Long stretches of highway you'll have a self-driving that goes from one staging area to another, and then it's picked up by a local delivery guy to finish off the run.

Of course it will improve, but it's not ready for use on our roads yet. A cell phone can't T-bone you at high speed in an intersection. Ignorance is putting new and dangerous tech to use before it's ready. They're beta testing this tech with us as the guinea pigs should something not work out.

Yet everything we use that involves technology isn’t 100% complete. The thought that sometimes I have to do a manual park regen speaks volumes. It will get released if the industry is satisfied that truck crashes will be reduced if autonomous vehicles are instated.

Guys we're not talking about tech in the form of a cell phone or something that gets done for us as a convenience. We're talking about tech where we literally put our lives in the hands of a computer to drive on streets and highways. All I'm trying to say is that this tech is very far from being the norm on our roads because as we're seeing, there is much more to autonomous vehicles that meets the eye.

Starting in September of this year, all new cars sold in the US much be equipped with AEB or automatic emergency braking. The feds felt that this tech would save countless lives every year. Just today, AAA came out with the results of their tests of this tech and its ability to prevent high speed accidents. Well guess what, the tech failed 100% of the time on all of the vehicles they tested. If you're traveling down a road at 60 MPH and a car turns in front of you, the tech is supposed to automatically apply the brakes, but it didn't work. A similar system to prevent cars from hitting pedestrians was also shown to not work by AAA tests.

    Here is the article.

Do you think regular people who don't use self driving tech, aren't crashing their cars? I see so much stupidity on the road every single day by people. I'd trust my life to a computer more than I ever would another human when it comes to driving... the self driving crashes get so much media exposure because it is brand new technology... it's constantly improving... people have been crashing their cars from the beginning of the first automobile ever produced....

You are missing the point that I am saying it will continue to improve... the point is who cares its on a well defined map? It's brand new technology... It takes time to develop, just like any new invention..how long did it take to develop the diesel engine from a steam engine? I'm sure some old timers back then called the diesel engine less efficient in the early stages of it and said steam is the only path forward.. The point is , self driving trucks exist and they will continue to exist no matter how much the old truck drivers live in denial thinking it will never happen... the point is, everything takes time to produce and develop... look how much cars transformed from the 1930s to the 1960 and then from the 60s to where we are now.... I'm sure if u told people in the 60s that engines one day would be controlled fully by computers, they would probably call it a pipe dream... if you told those same people, one day you could hold a tv and the internet in one hand and communicate to anybody in the world at any time on a cell phone, they would've asked what drugs ur smoking...

the point is , the analogy is the same... some will live in denial all the way until they retire... most can say they don't give 2 ####s because they will be out of the industry by then, but for someone like me in late 20s and early 30s this is our future and I hope people my age will understand that this technology will improve to the point it is usable by many.

Simple question do you use cruise control on ice ?? It’s been around for a long time and many trucks have traction control.. it works till it doesn’t then off into the ditch they go ..

yet if we equate humans to technology even humans aren't 100%. And after 110 years of automobiles we still crash em.

I would think before their making trucks fully autonomous, they'd prioritize making planes and boats fully autonomous, since they're usually out by themselves in the air or water and don't typically have other vehicles running in a line right next to them, but the airline industry still utilizes pilots, crews, and air traffic controllers in spite of auto-pilot and other technologies having been around for many decades. Likewise, ships still have crews as well. If humans still aren't being replaced but are just being assisted by technology in vehicles which don't even share the road, then I find it hard to believe they'll be replaced in vehicles which do.
