I will believe what I see with my own eyes, vs what some "experts" say... remember, outsiders look to the "ata" for an expert opinion on trucking.. And we all know how they push their own narrative vs what actually goes on....
With that said, I will disagree with you on this. But will remove myself from the conversation.

Sorry guys, be very worried about two things.
The first is the further decline in drivers who want to work and work with marginal skills, already we are seeing driver quality even in O/O world being ... well piss poor for a lack of a better term.
and second is the autonomous trucks that will fill the gap that is widening with this poor quality driver - they are already here.
Like the self driving cars (which are on the road north of here in Ann Arbor), self-driving trucks are already hauling freight.
SO it will increase and it will eventually impact our segment of the industry but that's going to be a while for it to happen.
What will happen is that gap being filled at the mega level where short point to point transportation on a predictable (traffic) route will be used at first than moving to longer routes to the point of mega OTR drivers will be moved out of the fleet and the revolving door will slow down after 20 plus years of high speed spinning. -
The govt can’t even fix potholes and paint the lines on the road often enough so you can see them at night ,
They can’t even stop unarmed people from crossing the border .
Can’t win any wars , walk away giving billions in weapons to the enemy , etc

My question is, why aren't plane's and trains fully autonomous. By now, they should have been able to perfectly engineer and program a freight or passenger train to travel along a stretch of railroad tracks by itself, yet they still have a crew of 1 or 2 in the cab. What about planes? Can't a plane be programmed to automatically take off and land, and fly itself to a destination airport safely? There are significantly less planes and trains in the world than trucks on the road each day. It doesn't make sense to me that truck will be completely autonomous, while planes and trains will still be manned by people... I agree that it's a pipe dream.

My opinions on autonomous vehicles (AVs):
It will happen but will be a slow adoption as it fights federal/state/local regulations, as it fights lobbyist/union groups in reference to jobs; and social controls such as carriers/businesses wanting only to do business with a human that supports their families and the acceptance of the public at large, as it upgrades infrastructure.
