Ok, that is a little high. Is that after an oil change?

Generally speaking dirty air will only effect your pistons and rings and to a lesser degree the valves, the crankshaft and camshaft are to far off to be harmed and are coated in more oil, if you are mechanically minded and have the time to do so it is possible to replace the pistons and rings yourself, you would save quite a bit in wages, however if you don't have the know how your best off getting someone else to replace them or alternatively get another re-conditioned engine.

Yeah...it's like that pretty much all the time. After oil change all the way to the next one

I might try running her for a bit longer. Still runs alright. Power is ok...fuel mileage could be a bit better but not terrible. Sounds good, starts good....just the smoky haze from the stacks and oil smell at front of the engine.

Ok, if it used a gallon and stopped using oil, I would say run it. Otherwise, it's time for a rebuild.

Drop in complete is the better deal all around if you have the coin. Better warranty less down time and all of the updates will be done to the engine by Cummins in a rebuild center. Not a dirty shop.

Front and rear structures are common to leak and fret which you don’t normally do on an in- frame.

Even Healthy engines can be finicky things sometimes. I’ve had engines use an alarming amount of synthetics but not use a drop of conventional.

For poops and giggles just switch back to conventional and see what it does. If oil use drops to normal use then don’t look back and run it and get your money’s worth out of it before another overhaul.

You don't have to answer, but the biggest thing the oil consumption is going to negatively effect is the EGR and DPF systems if still intact. Knowing this would vary my recommendation on moving forward and opens another large can of worms. I kind of go back and forth between rebuild vs reman. I have personally seen some very big machining cheats and mistakes on "factory" reman stuff.

"Factory Reman" does not neccessarily mean it was rebuilt at the factory either.

"Factory Reman" does not mean all brand new parts either. If parts are still within spec they go back in.

    skman and spsauerland Thank this.
