I've dropped several trailers, luckily all of them were on customer property, never on a road. I also leanred that a tug test and looking for the jaws to be closed on a 5th wheel DO NOT guarantee you have securely hooked to a trailer. There are ways to back under a trailer and your kingpin to catch the 5th wheel jaws and push them closed. When you do the tug test, the trailer just slides like you are dropping it. Many or most drivers are told to back under the 5th wheel, in that case, with some force and that should cause the trailer and 5th wheel to engage properly. If you find yourself under a trailer and the 5th wheel looks like it is ready to get on the road, but the trailer just will not come along do this: Pull the tractor slightly forward but still supporting the weight of the trailer. Set your brakes, and then go pull and hold the 5th wheel release handle ALL THE WAY OUT FOR 5 SECONDS and then release it. That usually resets the 5th wheel springs/mechanism. Now back under the trailer and try a tug test. It should latch properly and hold. If so you are ready to roll. Many times I found myself trying to find a piece of lumber or use my 5th wheel pin puller to force the 5th wheel jaws closed and then try to get rid of all of the grease I picked up. Instead of doing that try the pull and hold for 5 seconds on the 5th wheel handle. It's worked every time for me since a mechanic showed me that trick.
