Even though, after Katrina, officials tried to log all VIN number of cars flooded in New Orleans, it was impossible to log all of them. Many still made it to used car lots in states that weren't affected. Many were shipped to South America and Middle East. Some even re-registered them in states that weren't affected and hid the history of the car.

I can vouch for this-I used work at an Audi dealership 8 years ago before I started truck driving. At that time the dealership had picked up some used A4s at an auto auction that were going to be reconditioned and sold as used vehicles-some of which depending on the mileage were going to be CPO(certified pre owned). Two of the A4s I looked at when I pulled up the carpeting there were water stains on the floor pan, plus sand and grit in some of the electrical connections for the power seats and other components. The general manager of the dealer ran those cars’ VIN numbers. Lo and behold, those cars were originally totaled in New Jersey due to flooding from Hurricane Sandy!

    Just carfax it
Any vehicle registered in the area of a major hurricane , at the time of the storm, should be avoided .

I always buy old cars anyway , so not a concern for me .

there is no way I’m buying late model super complicated impossible to work on cars

So who was the genius to pick them up at auction? My sister manages a used car chain as is in charge of auction purchases. She dives DEEP into the VIN history of each unit prior to bidding and usually finds the flood cars first and, even more commonly, the rust-belt cars that were shipped to the south for auction to try and trick folks into bidding a higher price (should be rust-free in GA, after all)... most of those come from MA, NY and NJ.
