I hired a woman 16 months ago and had her hauling fuel and gravel, she came to me with only 3 years experience. Now she is 44, so she started trucking about age 39 i guess, training her to haul equipment now, and over sized, overweight loads. Today was her first time actually driving oversize, hauling a buncher.
Last night we loaded it, chained it down, today i made her unchain it and unload it alone while I stood there and watched. We are heading out of the bush now, should be at the hotel in an hour.
When she spun out in the mud, and looked at me, i said pretend that i am not here. She got out and chained up all 3 drive axles, and got us rolling again.
I took the chains off for her while she unloaded the buncher.

She thanked me for the hand.
I could do more for her, but when I cut her loose to do it alone, she has to have the confidence that doing it herself brings. So if a trainer someday makes you bust your ###, while he eats a snack, and takes a stroll, don't curse him, thank him.

You're not the first. I have heard your story before a few times. Older guy burned out from the corporate world looking to hit the road for a change of scenery. It's a journey for sure. It's definitely not for everyone but certainly an experience and an adventure none the less. I wish you all the best in your journey. I do hope you find whatever it is you are looking for on the road. Some do. Whatever it is it may very well be out there or maybe not but at least you looked right? when I was in trucking school there was a retired nurse that worked in the NC prison system. She was getting her CDL just cause someone told her she couldn’t do it. She had no intention of working

 

You say you are retired, I am assuming you are in good shape financially? Not asking to be nosey, it makes a world of difference as far as your level of satisfaction goes in the driving gig. If you are enjoying driving and doing it because you enjoy it rather than HAVE TO ie: in debt up to eyeballs, etc. I liked it much better when all my debt was payed off. I am medically retired now due to 29 years behind the wheel and thinking I was going to be young forever lol.
