In small town BC I still see great young drivers, who can fix the basics, work hard, and drive well.

I think the problem exists more in cities, and we have very few up here.
I was in the truck all day, and we didn't go through a single city, just small towns, then into the bush.
Things are truly different up here.

I told my rookie that we were leaving the yard at 05:00 hours, she was there at 03:50 cleaning it and looking it over. We were on the road by 04:25 she was smiling and laughing, even had the little honda filled with gas and oil checked.

I believe that its up to us the gen X like me, and the boomers, to teach the younger generations like my daughter.

Some of us "younger" guys were lucky enough to learn how to do brakes and wheel seals, bearings, u-joints etc before they were teenagers. You couldn't keep me away from the truck. Now that I'm older, I want to be miles away from that stuff once 5 o'clock Friday comes around.

I definitely didn't say I WANTED to do that stuff, just that we COULD! LOL

My wife is also a millenial, so maybe I am biased.
She is a darn fine woman, and I don't deserve her.

After almost a decade and a half of opening a toolbox every morning its kinda lost the prestige it once had. On the whole I enjoy what I do but its definitely not as exciting as it was when I was a kid.

25 years ago I loved driving truck so much, swore that love would burn bright forever.
Nowadays, I'm happy to let others drive instead.
My body is wore out, and aches, my energy level is down, and this winter I will only drive truck as needed, but not 6 days a week like i used to.
I'm sure that I will also be doing my fair share of snow plowing as well for those contracts.

Technology does fail at times. We are all subject to Murphy’s Law. I think it would be incredibly foolish to allow truck to be driven without a human body inside. Obviously humans mess up themselves but if they got their act together (stop drinking, texting, watching pron while driving, driving right up other bumpers, etc) many of those mess ups can be drastically improved upon. I just read a story of a man that works for XPO Logistics with 4 million miles accident free. Completely possible.

This is a LPT. Keeping the noggin working is very much a key to a satisfying life. Even if it's something we'll never use in real life, it's good for us to learn.
