So we pick up a load of onions. Our rate con says 6550 to haul 1800 bags of onions. We picked up 1690 bags and delivered today. After getting loaded, Before leaving the facility we showed him the bill of lading. Now that we have delivered the load he is trying to give us a rate con of 6137. He says since we did not deliver the 1800 bags of onions he is reducing the rate. What should we do?

That's about right, he's paying about 3.64 per bag, you had a short load, you get paid for the number of bags delivered.

I dont know what a rate con is, but based on the numbers youre paid $3.638 per bag. Seems like you were paid about right. You need to factor in all the variables, other work options, is the guy decent & respectful, the place clean, so on. Check the contract and see how you are paid (per bag or per load.

Ok I was just wondering why he would not of mentioned it when we left the property. If they would of put 1800 we would of be over weight so they lessened the load. But we provided him with the BOL before we left. No biggies if that is protocol. Thank you for the quick response. We never experienced that before so I guess maybe we will haul for him again. Lol

Bagged onions, spuds, ect is almost always X/bag. Rate is given on what is an average full load. Some scale more, some less.

It's probably happened to your customer before and he knew how to slide you guys out of there with no drama. He's a busy man and you're just one more PITA trucker with a gripe. We on this side of the fence know better, just trying to get you to see his point of view. It's not right but it's common.
Yes, he should have said something but would you have taken the load knowing the price was reduced?

Yes we would of took the load. It was in the middle of no where in processor wa so ya we were not going to leave without a load. So glad I posted and asked first because my mouth would of got the best of me, lol. It makes sense we did not haul what we said we were going to but it would of been cool to have a heads up on the lesser rate con. Sounds like he will have work for us in the future so I’m glad I did not go off like I first wanted to. Another ### saved by the TTR family. Thanks so much. Not sure if you all know it or not but y’all the best.

Okay, but be aware that your customer thinks you're an idiot. Don't prove him right. Don't trust his kind heart and generous nature to be fair and square with you.
Be nice, do a good job, but watch 'em like a hawk.

Remember when loading ####ing onions that the bags will usually be slightly heavier than than stated. So a 50lbs bag will probably average about 52lbs. This doesn't seem like much until you get a broker trying to say you'll get X amount for the load based on 950 bags when in reality all you'll be able to haul is 900. Watch our for brokers like B&G they used to try this all the time to scam newbs.
