I have been with this small company (20 truck fleet) for a year and a half now. Lately the workplace politics have been getting extreme for my liking.
All the drivers talk crap about each other. The dispatcher on my shift is extremely toxic, I complained about him once and sat without a load for 2 days (local work). I'm thinking about jumping ship honestly but with winter coming I was thinking of holding out until it passes (local work).
Any suggestions on what to do?
Also if anyone knows of work in the GTA long haul or local just let me know.
Toxic work politics

I'd stay away from the office as much as possible, stay to myself and don't get involved in it. Then start looking for a better job.
I was thinking of joining a company not far from me to try my hand at dispatching, but I got the vibe that it would be toxic. Forget that, life is too short to deal with it.LilRedRidingHood, Tb0n3, DispatchBuddy and 14 others Thank this. -
Some guys say small companies are the best but it can really be horrible if the office politics are like you describe... Especially if you get dragged into it... Me personally life is to short to deal with that crap, but you have to make your own decision on what u are willing to do... If you think you will be better off somewhere else, id start looking for work now and get it set up before you jump ship

When I worked for a mega fleet I never dealt with none of this. Like you said life is too short to put up with it.
Thanks for your response.

I wish u the best of luck man.. I would recommend just talking to other drivers when u go to shippers and recievers , or at truckstops. see how they like their company.. The drivers are gonna tell u like it is... You can get a better idea of how a company operates, from other drivers, rather than what a recruiter is gonna tell you. You know? Thats where i would start.Bodhi, Another Canadian driver, MartinFromBC and 2 others Thank this. -
I used to like talking to other drivers , now I hit the yard and pitch my stuff out of the truck avoiding crybabys and naysayers and haul arse out of the yard .

When ever i worked for small family owned companies in the past i’ve always gotten screwed over or had to deal with way more bs vs a large company or corporation.what you just said is the main reason i’ve stayed as long as i have at the mega i work for . I go into work do my job and as long as i don’t screw up no one bugs me . the dispatchers i work with on night shift are great and after midnight we deal with dispatch that’s over sea’s in siberia and they don’t have a clue and don’t push us .Every driver uses that to our advantage. Ie going home early sometimes when you’re really tired . The biggest problem i have where iam at is the pay or lack of it and with the cost of living going up and up iam getting to the point where i need to leave . Reading reviews on companies that pay more it seems like i would have to deal with a lot more bs for the pay .
Even at my company drivers talk sh$t about other drivers or even fight with each other and right now with a truck shortage it’s really bad . when night shift shows up we have to wait sometimes a hour or more for a truck and when guys see day shift drivers sitting in the yard killing time guys lose it and it causes problems. i try to stay out of itLast edited: Oct 15, 2022

This is becoming a huge problem, even at my company (which I do like a lot), it's really been making me question my decision to come into the office lately. Honestly, the big companies are so busy, there isn't time to play favorites or make guys sit, esp City. It's kind of Ironic, but the happiest guys I know now, are the ones that stuck it out at Bison. With Richardson running the show, the old boys club got sacked, the BS and bribes and all that got sacked, and it's just wide-open rock and roll. At least on the City/LCV/Regional side, no idea about the OTR meat grinder. Again, some of the happiest guys also work for the LTL companies, they toughed it out for 2 years to get into the money, UPS/XPO is so big, they utilize their people, end of story. You could literally be the anti-christ, and they would still keep you busy these days.
If it doesn't work out here, I'm only going to work for the biggest after this, cause this "small family company" BS is intolerable. (More like dysfunctional family).LilRedRidingHood, TSL80, peterd and 5 others Thank this. -
That's one of the reasons I like working in a union. Everything goes by seniority. Everyone has their place and if you don't like it, go work somewhere else.

Start carrying a Bible. They will run away from you.
