Check engine light for PID 157 and SPN-157

Issue started a month ago. Truck would suddenly go into a derate when over 50% engine load but then go out of the derate when out of engine load. Check engine light for PID 157 - 1 Fuel Rail Metering Pressure. Ended up replacing the fuel pressure relief valve and that solved that issue.

A few days later, idling in the truck stop, the truck slowly stalled out. (rpms slowly dropped till it couldnt run any more). Truck started up with no issues and I left it to idle. About 30 minutes later it does the same thing. Start it back up and this time left it on a fast idle of 800 RPM and it lasted for hours (was doing a 34). Only thing that I notice was that the engine load was constantly changing just enough to notice it. It was probably wanting to die but the revs were two high. While Idlig for long periods, that same check engine light for PID 157 would come on and off.

couple days later, went to start the truck in the morning and it could barely run. Would start and run at about 400 rpm if I kept the accelerator mashed. Took about 30 seconds before the truck finally got full fuel and ran.

next day I make it home. Truck is running fine

Mechanic checks it out and sees the fuel pressure is fluctuating. He was leaning 90% to bad injectors and 10% to the high pressure fuel pump. So we ordered 6 new injectors from cummins

2 weeks go by and im getting ready to head out for work. Start the truck up one morning and it ran for a second and then died. Restarted with no issues and ran fine but slightly off. Drove fine.

next day (today) I go to work. Run all day and the truck seems to be fine. park for the night and had the truck idling when after about an hour, it once again slowly stalls out and dies. Check engine light for PID 157 is back. Let the truck sit off while I typed this. Went to restart and It fired right up no problem, but about 5 minutes into running, it stalled out again

any ideas? Not much comes up online other than check wiring to fuel pressure sensor and Intake manifold sensor. I did find one other guy that was describing similar issues. Posts went back and forth about checking barometric air pressure and fuel pressure readings but not solution was ever found. Any one know anything about these engines that can help. Truck has been deleted since 2011 so Cummins and kenworth wont touch it.

Well you have allready replaced the relief valve and the injectors. Without troubleshooting I would say your high pressure pump is underperforming or on its way out. The other possibility is you have a low side issues causing restriction or air into the fuel system.

If you follow Cummins published troubleshooting for the faults they will lead you to the problem. Sounds like you need a more capable mechanic.

I trust him and been going to him for the past 2 years, but #### I get what you are saying.

When the truck was in the shop last, we weren't able to replicate the problem so he just went off of the information that the truck was giving him while running fine. Right now though the problem is steadily getting worse to where I think when I drop the truck off tomorrow, we will be able to get active fuel failure and actually diagnose what the issue is. That's what I hope at least.

I’m glad that you trust your guy. The fact is you have replaced a lot of parts and you still have a broken truck with the same code.

Gotta remember that diagnosing with an intermittent problem isn't easy for any one. But I did drop off the truck yesturday and 9n the way home it started leaking fuel from the injector rail fitting around cylinder 5 and 6. So it's possible it was cracked and letting in air or not allowing it to keep pressure at first but now finally started leaking. I'm still skeptical if that is the actual issue that caused all this from the start but we will figure it out.

I’m well aware of the difficulties diagnosing intermittent problems. There a big difference between replacing parts based on accurate testing results and getting out the parts cannon because it might be this or might be that.

I think your guy is guessing. I may be wrong. Good luck getting her fixed.
