    we currently us day cab semi trucks for our shipping container sales and rental business.

    We're considering trying a Dodge 5500 or F550 size truck with a 40' tilt bed trailer and see how they work out for us...

    we do long hauls with reefer containers that weight up to 12,000 Lbs. Also do a lot of local deliveries where four wheel drive would be a plus.

    so my questions are:

    1. leaning towards the 5500 dodge. any major issues with these trucks?
    2. what are the down sides of using a four wheel drive for this application?

    any opinions are appreciated!

    This is a pretty common issue with the Cummins. To be honest, I’d throw every Banks part at the thing, because pulling a large brick down the road is going to take all the power the thing can muster.



    Edge did dyno comparisons of stock trucks. The Ford is already ahead of the others, before 2023’s Powerstroke HO that’s coming. You can find the dyno chart on their FB page.

    Ford: 450hp/1115tq
    Dodge: 393hp/982tq
    GM: 390hp/890tq

    No downsides to 4wd. You’ll be glad you have it, when you need it.

    Ducnut, i might be pushing the envelope on what these trucks can do.... with the container and trailer i'll be hauling 24,000lbs quite a bit of the time???

    Yeah, there are some yacht haulers using the 5500. I question pulling the guts out of these platforms, long-term. In talking to an RV hauler, it seems the wear and tear rate is quite high on the dually platforms. He had a Class 6 Peterbilt, with 4-door cab, and said it was the best decision he’d made. The entire thing is heavier built, with big miles in mind. I can’t remember what Cat was under the hood.

    Why not just buy light duty single screw tractors, instead of basically a pickup minus the box.

    Pretty much pick any brand.

    If going for a ford or ram though, i would prefer a ram.
    I drive a ram diesel 4x4, been an excellent pickup.
