I see your point on this and understand it as well. I also see you work in ND most likely Oil stuff and PPE is a huge part of the industry and they push it so hard that it becomes nature afterwords. Maybe this guy is out of the south and not around ice and snow that much. I myself never have had to buy any cleats for the boots or shows for ice. But I am a firm believer in 3 point contact at all times. Just a thought process!

I just screwed a bunch of sheet metal screws into the bottom of an old pair of boots. Works great . I don't use them much anyways.

Halliburton issued boot chains to all employees in snow states. I still carry them in the truck. Can literally walk on ice without worry. Takes 5 seconds to strap on.
