A shiny 290 of course, what else? .... and hmmm, now I doubt if you are old enuf to know this one.. I had my little dime with a hole in the middle in my pocket ALL the time.... LOL!! (until I could get to the first truck stop that is)

You'll have to ask one of the older hands to explain that one to you if you don't know, betcha they do...

Just an old fart that knows those years of Internationals, and about how long a lease company used to run their trucks before selling them.

I was a stick hauler (new furniture for the newbies) out of NC in those days.

This is what I was driving in '77 & '78. I don't have any good pictures left. This is an old newspaper picture of my truck, that explains the grainy look. This was really a good looking truck. '76 Mack Cruiseliner, 300 Mack engine, 5 spd Maxidine trans. The truck was white with metallic brown stripes outlined with black. The aluminum was all polished, and we had new 45' Fruehauf drop frame trailers, and 45' single axle Great dane trailers.

This was my first new truck. A 1980 Pete COE, 400 Cummins, 13 sp overdrive, 370 rears. The trailer was a 42 ft Freuhauf, 96" wide.

You got that right!!! Wouldn't work on the newer formula engines. Worked great on the old small cam engines though.

How about a stinger? Ever use one of those?

    Krestiekrew & Stranger,

Care to elaborate on the dime trick?

I've got a truck with a 290 Cummins that might be able to use a trick or two.

Big cam or small cam engine? If a small cam with the old style pump, you would drill a small hole in a dime, and insert it into the return fuel line at the tank fitting, and tighten it down. The dime would forum to the fitting. This would restrict the return fuel from the engine, making for more fuel pressure, thus making for more power, according to what size hole you drilled. You had to watch your temp gauge closely when pulling or you could melt a piston.

Nuts! I'm pretty sure mine's a Big Cam. Getting the truck running again will be my main project starting in the spring so I've been searching for tips & tricks as part of my research.

    Thanks anyway.
