I drove flatbed years ago. The first time around I did not get any endorsements. This time around I plan on going back into flatbed with the goal of moving up to heavy haul. Obviously, I am anxious to get through the classes and get back to work. Is it worthwhile to consider pushing an orientation back a few days to go take my endorsements coming out of classes. I do not know how often the heavy hauls actually need the doubles and triples endorsements. I know it is load dependent. I also know I need to get back behind the wheel in flatbed before I can look at f/t heavy/oversized. In theory I could always take the tests later, just not sure what direction to go on this. An old(er) school newbie.

you should be able to figure out why and when you would need doubles/triples endorsement to do heavy haul.

it will help you to develop your problem solving g skills - a needed skill set to do the job.

Having said that - no sane person is going to let a new guy out with a load that requires equipment that would then drive the need for the doubles/triples endorsement.

No need to delay your start for this endorsement

you can run a lot of ‘heavy haul’ freight without the endorsement — my states DMV was 4+ months out and I waited that long to get my endorsement. I wouldn’t let it put a burden on you… as you probably won’t need it for a year or more anyway. You may also find that you have no desire to run a trailer that requires the endorsement in the first place.

Here's the problem, from my point of view. Depending on the requirements of the state, and whether you actually have to do a driving test in the equipment you're getting an endorsement in, you may have to pay or provide the equipment. If not, and it's a test only, no biggie..but I got mine years ago by grandfathering my work history on the vehicles so I didn't have to drive each type of vehicle when the CDL just came out, and took them all. Now, there is this additional course you need to take as a new driver, I believe..forgot what it's called, but that may also be another hurdle. Like the others have said, if you don't need it right now, and since you don't have past work history, you may need to prove you can operate the type of equipment in a driving test, and if that is the case, it's probably best to wait until your employer decides to train you on the equipment properly before you go for the endorsement, since they will most likely provide the equipment also for you to take that test if a driving test is required. Find out what you need to know before jumping for it. Here is not the place, your DMV office is. :) Good luck.

I do have past history as a flatbed driver. I am just getting back into it. The course is the ELDT course and I am in that. In Texas it is just the written endorsement exams except HME that requires the background check through Identigo, did my TWIC last Thursday. I will need at least 1 to 2 years recent history before I can look at heavy haul.

Why do you need 1 to 2 years before you can look at heavy haul?

Are you in with a company already and that’s their requirement?

Plenty of companies are looking for drivers right now that want to do this line of work — especially in Texas and the Oklahoma area.

Then if it's only a written test without a driving component, go for it. Most of the books have the needed material to pass the test, then at least, the employer can train you without needing to worry about you doing so without the endorsement.

No just poking my nose and lots wanted 1 to 2 years recent experience. I have not worked since 2016 as I have been providing at home care for my wife. Just today TX DPS reissued my CDL as I was in the 12-month window of being downgraded for not having a current med card. Just got back from dropping off med card and CDL re-issued. Scheduled my endorsement tests foe next Wednesday. The classes I am in have an ELDT HME class so I should be able to take that as well.

Yes, easy tests. Common sense and basic mechanical knowledge will get you through those.
