Are you saying flip-flops aren't part of standard flatbedding ppe?

Sure, but do not cry when a snap binder flies open and whacks em. Don't howl if a piece of dunnage slips in your hands and falls on em. Finally, dont worry about that tetanus shot if a sharp piece of metal (rusted or not) cuts em. By all means wear your flipflop shower shoes if you want to. Just don't get mad while the rest of us laugh at you when the plant safety manager is cussing you out.

Play by their rules unless what they're asking you to do is something that you just refuse to allow.

Example, if they want me to put in ear plugs in a quiet environment I'll gladly do so and laugh inside at how ignorant they are.

If they say I have to show a vaccine passport to enter... I'll refuse. But I'll also accept the consequences of getting fired for my decision.

No matter what, they control their company, but you control whether or not you're willing to abide by their requirements. You just need to decide where to draw the line in the sand.

If hearing protection is your line, that's fine. But it's not mine. But whatever you decide, be ready to stand by your decision.

This is exactly it. If you don’t like their rules go somewhere else.

Ya they can, most I've been to don't enforce any ears plugs though. I was loading at gerdau steel a couple years ago and hot rod in the safety truck decided to hassle me about "not" wearing the required hard hat chin strap, even though i had it on... He didn't want to shut his mouth after he was in the wrong therefore, I told him to just unload my trailer. Pretty simple.

If you want to see strict, go to a mine. You'll get sensory overload from all the safety.
