That's going to be a barrier to most. Unless you are early 20s still living at home and Mom and Dad can subsidize you if necessary, most drivers with living responsibilities aren't going to survive those slow weeks with 20 hrs or less.

ABF barn 10 minutes from my house is always advertising a casual driver/warehouse position. I just couldn't take the risk of not being able to cover my mortgage unless they were guaranteeing 40 hrs a week...which they would put in the ad if they were.

It's rough in the beginning, for sure. Can't sugarcoat that. But if it's for you and you can hang in there, it's a fine career.

With the exception of two companies, I make significantly more running regional otr than I would running ltl where I live. Those two exceptions would see me making about the same, but running third shift.

Now if I were to move two hours south, the math changes. Move three hours south and going ltl would be a no brainer.

It definitely depends on the region and the terminal.

How much does an average p&d driver in the Midwest make a year working 45-50 hours a week?

Different strokes as they say...I tried LTL years ago thinking it was the ticket, turned out I hated it and went back OTR.

    why didn't i go LTL..??

i hated working..i had no gumption to lump freight day in, day out, 5 days a week.

i had no gumption to drive in the city, 5 days a week.

i had no gumption to work with others.

i only did "long haul" when i first started and it ended when i got as little as 4 months experience, for a regional driving job. being home every 2 days, sometimes 3 days, and home EVERY weekend, and ALL holidays.

then i got in dedicated work, same customer, same stops, same truck/trailer. the job got done in only a few hours each night, and i made a killing.

going OTR is NOT "romantic" in any way shape or form, i don't know how you got the idea that it is, or ever was.

whatever "floats one's boat" in what he or she wants to do....

Petro in OKC, saw a fatty driver chasing after a lot lizard at 12:30 am. Was 40 degrees and all he had on was his underpants and flip flops.. Does that qualify as romantic?

Some of us like to look the owner in the face and say you're fired and the owner says you're still delivering that load. Mirror Mirror on the wall who's the owner of it all. I am :D:rolleyes::D
